Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Peoria? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Peoria; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Peoria with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Found Hand Tools near Peoria Riverfront Market

I was walking along the sidewalk behind the Peoria Riverfront Market around 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday when I spotted a tool bag with a hammer, screwdrivers, pliers, and a tape measure. It looked like someone had dropped it while heading toward the riverfront path. I picked it up and kept it safe in my backpack, hoping the owner would recognize it. The tools show signs of regular use, likely from a home workshop, and I know how important that kit can be for a job around the house. It would be great to see it back with its owner.

Found dresses outside Peoria Riverfront Museum

This afternoon, around 3:45 p.m., I was walking along Main Street near the Peoria Riverfront Museum in Peoria, Illinois, when I spotted these dresses lying on the sidewalk by a bench. They’re a pink satin dress with lace trim, and a navy-blue cocktail dress with a beaded bodice. The pink dress has a slightly snagged hem, and the navy dress has a small stain near the zipper. It felt like they were left there by someone who needed a quick moment of peace, and I wanted to help reunite them with their owner. If you’ve been missing these, I hope this helps bring them back home.

Found saxophones after Peoria riverfront festival

I was volunteering at the Peoria Riverfront Jazz Fest near Peoria Riverfront Park around 3:45 PM on Saturday when I spotted a hard-shell saxophones case tucked behind a bench near the stage. Inside were two saxophones, a worn neck strap, and a dusty reed case. My first thought was to find the owner; I know how heavy a loss feels when you’re practicing late and lose track of gear. I’m posting here because I’d want someone to be reunited with their music after a long day. If this helps, the gear looks well-loved and I’ve kept it safe since I found it.

Black Wayfarer-style glasses with etched initials

I found a pair of glasses this morning around 7:45am on the sidewalk outside the Riverfront Park entrance off Main Street in Peoria. They’re black acetate Wayfarer-style frames with a small scratch on the right lens and initials 'A.J.' etched on the inner left temple. The glasses sit in a navy blue hard case with a slightly worn zipper, tucked under a bench near the Oak Street crossing. They look well-loved but still sturdy, and I figured they must belong to someone who really needs them for work or school. If you’re missing a pair, I’d love to help get them back to you—please reply with a description of the case or those initials.

Red puffer jacket with blue patch

I found this red puffer jacket this afternoon around 3:05pm in the parking lot behind the Peoria Riverfront Park entrance off Adams Street. It's a Columbia-brand red puffer, size M, in decent condition with a small snag at the left cuff and a distinctive blue patch stitched on the right sleeve. Inside the pocket there's a white name tag that reads 'Alex Rivera'—could be the owner, maybe this helps someone identify it. The jacket looks pretty loved but still warm and cozy, and I’d love to see the owner get it back. If you’re missing it, drop me a message and we can meet up near the park to arrange a pickup.

Found blue parakeet near Peoria Public Library

I found a small blue parakeet this afternoon around 2:15pm near the Peoria Public Library on Main Street, by the fountain outside the entrance. The bird is bright cobalt blue with a white cheek patch and a tiny silver leg band engraved 'KP-4' that makes it easy to identify. It sat calmly on my finger for a moment, then hopped back onto the railing. It seems healthy and friendly, but I couldn't find a cage or owner nearby in the area around the library and bus stop. If this is your bird, please reach out with any distinguishing details so we can get it back to you.
