At 8:15 p.m. last Friday, I finished decorating the tree in my Duluth apartment and set a tote of holiday decorations by the door. When I looked back fifteen minutes later, the tote was gone—it's a stark reminder that I lost them in a blink. The decorations include a green velvet garland, a string of warm white lights, and a glass snowflake ornament I inherited from my grandmother. The lights blinked in the reflection of the Aerial Lift Bridge across the canal, and I felt a hollow ache thinking of Christmas without them. There's a faint coffee stain along the seam from a quick cafe stop, and the fabric is slightly pilled from travel. The pillow was a gift from my sister for long trips, so it feels sentimental and I really need it back.
