Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Meadville? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Meadville; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Meadville with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Found: Hoops on Market Street in Meadville

On Friday at 7:20 p.m., I found a pair of hoops on the sidewalk outside the Meadville Public Library on Market Street. They looked recently dropped, so I tucked them into a pocket and brought them to the front desk at the Meadville Community Center to keep them safe. The hoops are medium-sized, silver, with a few scratches from practice, and they clearly belong to someone who wears them daily. It felt like stumbling on a small part of someone’s routine and I wanted to do the right thing and help reunite them with their owner.

Found gym clothes behind Meadville YMCA, Chestnut St

While I was jogging by the Meadville YMCA on Chestnut Street this afternoon around 2:40 p.m., I found a bundle of gym clothes behind the back entrance near Diamond Park. It looks like a complete set—a gray hoodie, black leggings, and a neon pink gym bag strap—stuff that clearly belongs to someone who spends hours at the gym. I carried the clothes to the YMCA front desk so the owner could identify them by the color and the logo on the hoodie. It gave me a little peace to know someone will have their workout routine back soon.

FOUND: Travel adapters in Meadville

I found a blue pouch with a universal travel adapter kit sticking out from under a bench outside the Meadville Market House on Market Street around 6:30 PM Saturday. It’s got several plug types and a neat little strap—clearly someone on the move. It was near the entrance where folks rest after walking the block, and I figured it must belong to a traveler who'll be relieved to have it back. I picked it up, stashed it in my bag for safekeeping, and posted here hoping the owner claims it soon. Travel can be stressful enough without missing a charger.

Teal-glazed ceramic wall vase

I found a teal-glazed ceramic wall vase yesterday around 3pm outside the Meadville Public Library on Chestnut Street. It's about 9 inches tall, with a glossy glaze that shifts from teal to emerald in the sunlight, and there's a tiny chip on the rim. There's a small, faded Studio Nova tag on the back, and a subtle gold speck pattern along the edge. If it's yours, reach out and we can figure out where to meet in Meadville to get it back—I'm happy to help return it near the library or on Market Street.

Neon-green dog harness with leash

I found a neon-green dog harness with an orange reflective stripe and a matching black leash this afternoon around 3pm behind the Meadville Public Library on Market Street. It's a medium Rabbitgoo harness with a sturdy metal D-ring and a quick-release buckle. The chest strap features a white paw print pattern, and there's a tiny tear near the neck opening—it's clearly been used but still functional. It looked like someone dropped it near the library steps, so I posted here in case the owner is missing it. DM me here and we can arrange a safe pickup near Market Street by the library.

Black Ray-Ban Wayfarer glasses with initials KM

I found a pair of black Ray-Ban Wayfarer-style glasses this afternoon around 2:45pm outside the Meadville Public Library on Market Street, near the fountain by the main entrance. The frames are black plastic, rectangular, a bit larger than average, with a matte finish and a few light scuffs along the front. The left temple is engraved with 'KM' on the inside, and the lenses show a faint scratch on the left lens. I didn’t see a case nearby. I figured someone in Meadville might be missing them and I’d love to get them back to their owner.
