I was walking along the Lake Charles Civic Center grounds around 2:45 p.m. today when a small velvet pouch tucked under a bench revealed a cluster of brooches. The pins glittered—some enamel birds, a delicate pearl, a gold-tone leaf—clearly cherished items from a special occasion. I felt a twinge of responsibility, like I’d stepped into someone else’s memory and needed to protect it. I left the pouch and brooches on the bench with a note and headed to the information desk, hoping the owner would recognize them soon.
