I turned the living room upside down—behind the couch, under the radiator, inside the laundry hamper—without any luck. One is white with a lilac stripe, the other is cream with a gray patch; they’re shy but endlessly curious, and I miss their tiny squeaks and their furry wiggles. I was at the North Dakota State Capitol grounds, near the Missouri River overlook, around 3:10 PM today when I realized my Breeds notebook had vanished from my tote. It’s a small spiral-bound notebook with a weathered cover labeled Breeds and several dog-profile tabs inside. It holds notes from volunteer shifts at the shelter and a few doodles I made between appointments. Losing it feels like I’ve misplaced part of my work and memory.
