Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Zanesville / Cambridge? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Zanesville / Cambridge; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Zanesville / Cambridge with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Found: Holiday Decorations near the Y-Bridge, Zanesville

I was walking my dog along Market Street by the Y-Bridge in Zanesville on Sunday around 4:20 p.m. when I spotted a box of holiday decorations that looked out of place on a curb. Among them I found garlands, lights, and a Santa hat—clearly someone’s Christmas haul from Cambridge. I brought them home to keep them dry and safe, hoping to reunite them with their owner. If these belong to you, I’ve held onto them in a dry corner and would be glad to help get them back.

found Brooches near Y-Bridge, Zanesville

I was walking along Market Street in Zanesville, Ohio, around 3:45 p.m. on a sunny Thursday when I spotted a small velvet pouch tucked behind a planter by the Columbian Theatre. Inside were several vintage brooches—one with a blue stone, another a delicate gold leaf, and a couple more I couldn’t immediately identify. It felt like a little treasure trove waiting to be returned to a rightful owner, so I picked them up and kept them with me, hoping to reunite them with the person who lost them. They look like keepsakes, perhaps heirlooms from a family gathering. If these belong to you, please check the site for details and arrange to reclaim them.

Hey there, I'm Alex Carter. I found these Organizers on Maple Street near the Y-Bridge overlook in Zanesville around 2:10 p.m. today. They look like a stack of binder organizers for meetings, with a couple of club labels still attached and a notebook tucked inside one. I’m holding onto them here for now because I know how important it is for someone to have their documents in order during events. If this belongs to you, please check the listing on the site and claim them through the system.

Blue Nike running shoes, size 9, found near Court Street

I found these this morning around 9:15 am in the parking lot in front of the CVS on Court Street in Cambridge. They're blue Nike running shoes, size 9, with a white swoosh and black heel accents. The left toe has a small scuff, and one shoe has a tiny blue star sticker on the inner heel. They’re in good condition overall, and I’m hoping the owner sees this and can claim them; I’ll hold onto them here until then.

Black tote bag with red lining and panda keychain

Category: Miscellaneous Bags. I found a medium-sized black canvas tote bag with a bright red lining this afternoon around 2:15pm behind the Cambridge Market on Wheeling Avenue. It has a blue panda keychain clipped to the zipper and a small coffee stain on the front pocket; otherwise it's in decent condition. There's a spiral notebook inside with a Cambridge Crew sticker, but I haven't opened it to avoid messing with anything. If the owner sees this, please know I'm hoping to get it back and I'd love to return it to you.

Red enamel cast-iron Dutch oven with lid

I found this red enamel cast-iron Dutch oven with a black lid knob this afternoon around 3:15pm, sitting on the sidewalk outside the Cambridge Grand Opera House on Wheeling Avenue. It's about a 7-quart pot, in decent shape with a small chip on the rim near the handle and a faint stain inside from recent use. The bottom is etched with the initials LP, and there's sticker residue on the lid. If you can describe the chip and the initials, I’ll get it back to its rightful owner.
