Lost pet — how to find them fast

A fast, practical plan for finding a lost pet, plus the shelters and microchip registries to contact.

When a pet goes missing in Western Massachusetts, speed and visibility are everything. Most lost pets are found close to home within the first day.

  1. Search the immediate area. Check nearby gardens, sheds, and quiet spots. Bring treats and a familiar item, and call calmly.
  2. Alert the microchip registry. Flag your pet as missing with the microchip database so your details are current if they're scanned.
  3. Call local shelters and vets. Phone shelters, pounds, and veterinary practices around Western Massachusetts and ask them to note your pet's description.
  4. Post online and on lost-pet databases. Share clear photos in local community groups and lost-pet services.
  5. Put up visible notices. A simple poster with a photo, the area, and a contact number still works.
  6. Post a listing. Add a lost-pet listing for Western Massachusetts so found-pet reports nearby surface alongside yours.

Brown-black hound mix named Scout, lost in Northampton

I’m missing Scout, a five-year-old brown-black hound mix about 50 pounds. He wears a blue nylon collar with a red name tag that says 'Scout' and a small reflective stripe. Yesterday around 3pm we were on Main Street by Smith College near the campus market area when a passerby startled him and he bolted toward the river path behind the Northampton Athletic Center. He has a white patch on his chest and a slight limp in his left hind leg. He’s friendly, really attached to me, and this dog means the world to me—please help me bring him home; text 413-555-0189 or email [email protected] if you see him.

Gray mini-lop rabbit, white-tipped ears

I lost my gray mini-lop rabbit yesterday around 3pm near Thornes Market on Main Street in Northampton, MA, Western Massachusetts. It's about 2.5 pounds with soft fur and a white patch on its chest plus white-tipped ears. It's not wearing a collar, and I last saw him near the Thornes Market parking lot. He has a tiny notch on the right ear that makes him easy to ID, and I’m really worried—this rabbit is part of our family and has sentimental value. If anyone finds him, please text or call me; I’d be forever grateful.

Orange-and-white dwarf hamster Mochi missing

I lost my orange-and-white dwarf hamster Mochi yesterday around 3pm after I left his cage door open in my apartment above a cafe on North Pleasant Street in Amherst. He’s tiny, about an inch long, with an orange patch over his right eye and a white belly, plus a small white crescent-shaped patch on his back. I last saw him near the radiator by the campus bus stop, close to the Fine Arts Center and Kendrick Park. Mochi is my little buddy and has helped me through a rough month, so I’d really appreciate any sightings or a safe return. If you spot him, please text me.
