Lost your phone? Step-by-step recovery

Carrier contacts, Find My / Find My Device, and the local steps to recover or secure a lost phone.

Losing your phone in Washington DC is stressful, but acting quickly improves your odds of getting it back and limits the damage if it's gone for good. Work through these steps in order.

  1. Locate it remotely. Use Find My (iPhone) or Find My Device (Android) from another phone or computer to see the phone on a map, play a sound, and mark it as lost. Lost Mode locks the device and shows a contact message on the screen.
  2. Lock and message it. If it's nearby, the sound may be enough. If it isn't, enable Lost Mode and add a phone number where you can be reached.
  3. Call your carrier. Report the phone lost so they can suspend service and block the IMEI. This stops anyone running up charges and flags the handset across networks.
  4. Change key passwords. Update your email, banking, and social passwords, especially if the phone wasn't locked. Sign the device out of those accounts where you can.
  5. Report it locally. File a report with the police non-emergency line for Washington DC — a crime reference number is often required for insurance claims.
  6. Post a listing. Add a lost-phone listing for Washington DC so anyone who finds it can reach you privately.

Keep checking the map periodically — a phone that's off may reappear when it's charged.

Nintendo Switch OLED in gray protective case

I lost my Nintendo Switch OLED yesterday around 3pm near the Lincoln Memorial on 23rd Street NW. It's the model with neon red and blue Joy-Cons, tucked inside a charcoal-gray soft-shell case with a blue zipper. There's a small galaxy sticker on the back and a minor scratch on the bottom edge of the screen. It also has a screen protector on. It was a gift from my sister and it really means a lot to me; I used it every evening after work. If anyone found it, I’d be forever grateful to get it back.

Lost black Nintendo Switch in a blue carry case with scratches near a café by the National Mall, Washington DC.

I lost my black Nintendo Switch while visiting a café near the National Mall in Washington DC last Saturday. I believe I left it on a table by the window. It has a few scratches on the back and is in a blue carry case that's slightly worn. I was really looking forward to playing it during my trip, and it's got some of my favorite games on it. Please let me know if you find it!

Lost blue Sony Bluetooth headphones with scratches near the Lincoln Memorial at the National Mall.

I misplaced my blue Sony Bluetooth headphones while walking around the National Mall in Washington DC. I remember having them while looking at the Lincoln Memorial, but after stopping for a quick coffee, I realized I didn't have them with me. They have a few scratches but still work perfectly. If anyone finds them, they would mean a lot to me!
