On Friday at 7:45 p.m., I realized my dolls were lost from the tote I carry to events. I had paused by the Citygarden and the Gateway Arch when a light rain began, and they vanished from the zipper pocket. They’re two old companions: a porcelain girl in a blue dress and a tiny rag doll with yarn hair. They’ve travelled with me since childhood, tucked on a shelf above my dresser.
