Lost pet — how to find them fast

A fast, practical plan for finding a lost pet, plus the shelters and microchip registries to contact.

When a pet goes missing in Southern Illinois, speed and visibility are everything. Most lost pets are found close to home within the first day.

  1. Search the immediate area. Check nearby gardens, sheds, and quiet spots. Bring treats and a familiar item, and call calmly.
  2. Alert the microchip registry. Flag your pet as missing with the microchip database so your details are current if they're scanned.
  3. Call local shelters and vets. Phone shelters, pounds, and veterinary practices around Southern Illinois and ask them to note your pet's description.
  4. Post online and on lost-pet databases. Share clear photos in local community groups and lost-pet services.
  5. Put up visible notices. A simple poster with a photo, the area, and a contact number still works.
  6. Post a listing. Add a lost-pet listing for Southern Illinois so found-pet reports nearby surface alongside yours.

Puppies lost near Garden of the Gods overlook in Southern Illinois

I was hiking with my two puppies along the Garden of the Gods Recreation Area overlook in Southern Illinois around 3:15 p.m. today when a sudden gust whipped the leash and sent them wandering toward the rock formations. They are a beagle and a small terrier mix, one brown with white patches and the other mostly black with a white chest, both wearing small collars with tags. I am devastated; these puppies are all I have after moving to Southern Illinois, and I am hoping for a quick reunion. If you saw them near the overlook or heard a bark in the woods, please tell the site staff; we would be grateful for any help.

Lost green cockatiel with yellow crest

I lost my green cockatiel yesterday around 3pm near River Bank Plaza on West Main Street in Carbondale, Southern Illinois. It’s a domesticated bird, about 12 inches from beak to tail, with a bright yellow crest, orange cheek patches, and a blue-tinted tail. It also wears a silver leg band on the right leg with the number 246. I’ve had him for four years, he’s my little buddy and I miss him a lot—he usually perches on my shoulder and chirps when I whistle. If anyone spots him, please email me at [email protected].

Lost blue dog collar with dog-themed tags and a silver bell in Riverside Park.

I lost my dog's collar while walking him in Riverside Park in Southern Illinois. The collar is blue, has a few cute dog-themed tags attached, and there's a little silver bell on it. I realized it was missing when we got home and I can't stop worrying about it. My dog, Max, feels so bare without it. If anyone finds it, please let me know!
