Lost something on public transport?

How to track down an item left on a bus, train, tram, or taxi by contacting the right transport operator.

Items left on buses, trains, trams, and taxis around Maine are usually handed in to the operator's lost property team — the trick is contacting the right one quickly.

  1. Identify the operator. Note the route, line, or company and the rough time. Each operator runs its own lost property process.
  2. Submit a lost property report. Use the operator's online form or phone line as soon as possible; recovered items are logged against your description.
  3. For taxis and rideshare, contact the driver or company directly through your booking or app receipt.
  4. Keep your reference. Save any report number so you can chase it up.
  5. Post a listing. Add a listing for Maine in case a fellow passenger picked it up.

Lost gym clothes in Portland, Maine

Hi, I’m Mia Barker. I lost my gym clothes this morning in Portland, Maine. After a 6:30 a.m. workout at the Portland YMCA on Fore Street, I left my black duffel on a bench by the treadmills. By 7:15 a.m. the bag was gone. Inside: a gray moisture-wicking tank, black leggings, and a neon-green hoodie with a small pine-tree patch. The bag smells of chlorine and laundry soap, and I tucked in a sweaty headband and a damp towel. I’ve been wandering the Old Port area since, hoping someone picked it up and turned it in at the front desk. It’s a small thing, but it carries a lot of my routine and routine hopes.

Lost carry-ons near the Old Port, Portland, Maine

Sunday at 11:15 AM, I realized my carry-ons were missing after a quick stop at a cafe on Exchange Street in Portland, Maine. They’re two small rolling suitcases plus a tote—the suitcases have a bright red strap, and the tote has a sunburst patch. Losing them threw a wrench into my travel plans, since I rely on those bags for work and personal items. I’m hoping someone nearby picked them up and can help reunite them with me through the site. If you saw any luggage near the Old Port or Casco Bay Ferry Terminal, please leave a note here.

Lost Avians near Old Port, Portland

LOST: I was cleaning up around 8:40 p.m. last Tuesday in the Old Port district of Portland when my two birds were gone from their cage. Cheddar and Mango are two friendly cockatiels, bright-green with yellow heads, who chatter at every turn. I can't stop thinking about their tiny wings and how they'd hate to be apart from me for even a night. If you see them, please know how much it would mean to have them back home with me.

LOST Sculptures in Portland, Maine

I lost my sculptures on Friday around 7:30 PM in downtown Portland, Maine. I had been moving two sculptures in a weathered wooden crate along Congress Street when a gust swept the crate off the handcart and into the street near the Portland Museum of Art. One piece is copper, about 28 inches tall; the other is a pale stone abstract. I retraced my steps along Congress Street and the Western Prom, but they’re nowhere to be found. They’re years of work and a big part of my life, and I’m hoping a neighbor or passerby might have picked them up and seen this post.

Lost sheet music, Portland, Maine

I'm missing my sheet music for a violin recital, taken from my messenger bag around 7:30 p.m. yesterday near Congress Street in Portland. It's a well-worn stack of pages with pencil notes and a coffee ring on the corner. I've practiced these pieces for months, and the recital is in two weeks; I'm anxious something irreplaceable is gone. If you found it, I'd be grateful for any help returning it to its owner.
