Lost pet — how to find them fast

A fast, practical plan for finding a lost pet, plus the shelters and microchip registries to contact.

When a pet goes missing in Holland, speed and visibility are everything. Most lost pets are found close to home within the first day.

  1. Search the immediate area. Check nearby gardens, sheds, and quiet spots. Bring treats and a familiar item, and call calmly.
  2. Alert the microchip registry. Flag your pet as missing with the microchip database so your details are current if they're scanned.
  3. Call local shelters and vets. Phone shelters, pounds, and veterinary practices around Holland and ask them to note your pet's description.
  4. Post online and on lost-pet databases. Share clear photos in local community groups and lost-pet services.
  5. Put up visible notices. A simple poster with a photo, the area, and a contact number still works.
  6. Post a listing. Add a lost-pet listing for Holland so found-pet reports nearby surface alongside yours.

Orange tabby cat with green collar near Windmill Island Gardens

I lost my orange tabby cat yesterday around 3pm near Windmill Island Gardens in Holland, by the parking lot off 8th Street. He's about 9 pounds, short-haired, mostly orange with a small white patch on his chest and a tiny notch in one ear. He wears a bright green collar with a silver bell and a microchip tag. He’s pretty skittish but warms up quickly once he knows you, and he’s meant a lot to me—he’s been with me since he was a kitten. Please reach out if you’ve seen him; I’m really hoping to get him back!

Blue paw-print dog collar with Nova tag

Yesterday around 3pm I realized my dog Nova’s blue nylon collar was missing. I was walking near Windmill Island Gardens and then along College Avenue in Holland when it must have slipped off. The collar is medium width, bright blue nylon with a white paw-print pattern and a small stainless steel name tag engraved 'Nova' with my phone number. There’s also a tiny lime-green bone charm attached. We’ve had Nova since she was a puppy, so this collar has sentimental value and I’m really hoping to find it. If you’ve seen it, please drop me a note—I’d be grateful to get it back.

Small golden hamster with heart-shaped chest patch

I lost my small golden hamster yesterday around 3pm near Windmill Island Gardens in Holland. Its fur is warm golden-brown with a white chest and a tiny white patch on its left ear. It was in a blue plastic exercise wheel inside a clear plastic cage with pine bedding, and the door was left ajar when I was cleaning. This little guy is a gift from my sister overseas and has sentimental value; I’d really love to have him back, especially because of his heart-shaped chest patch and slightly bent left ear.

Green budgie with yellow head, red leg band

I lost my green budgie with a bright yellow head yesterday around 3pm near Windmill Island Gardens in Holland. It's a small parakeet, about the size of a soda can when perched, with a green body, blue-tinted wings, and white cheek patches. It wears a red plastic leg band on its right leg and has a tiny white feather notch on the left wing—easy to spot if you see him around the trees. I adopted him last year; he's my kid's best little buddy and we've been worried sick since he vanished. If anyone finds him, drop me a line—we'd really appreciate bringing him back home.
