Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Hawaii? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Hawaii; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Hawaii with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Blue ceramic teapot with bamboo lid

I found this blue ceramic teapot with a bamboo lid this morning around 9:15am on Kalakaua Avenue, right outside the Duke Kahanamoku statue in Waikiki, Honolulu, Hawaii. It's about 1.2 liters, with a glossy cobalt glaze and a tiny chip on the rim. On the bottom there is a faint maker's mark that reads 'Nalu Ceramics.' The lid fits snugly, and the overall look is clean aside from that small flaw. If you own it, I’d love to get it back—send me a message here and we can meet near the statue in Waikiki to hand it over.

Tan OluKai sandals with lime stitching

I found a pair of OluKai sandals this afternoon around 2:15pm outside the ABC Stores on Kalakaua Ave, right near Waikiki Beach Walk. They’re tan leather with lime-green stitching and a slightly scuffed sole, size 9 men’s. The left strap has a tiny hibiscus sticker near the buckle, a little detail that could help identify the owner. They’re still a bit sandy from the beach, but otherwise in good shape. If these belong to you, reply with the brand, size, and that hibiscus detail to claim them.

Red dog harness with reflective trim

I found a red nylon dog harness with reflective piping this afternoon around 4:15pm on Kalakaua Avenue near the ABC Stores in Waikiki, Honolulu. It's a medium size with a quick-release buckle and a lime-green name tag sewn inside that says 'Roxy'. The outside shows a little sun fade but it's still sturdy, with a tiny nick near the D-ring from contact with a wall corner. If this belongs to someone, please reach out so I can help reunite you with your pup.

Silver Yamaha flute in black case with yellow lining

Found a silver Yamaha flute this afternoon around 2:45pm near the Pearl City Farmers Market on Kamehameha Highway in Pearl City, Oahu, Hawaii. It’s tucked in a black hard case with a bright yellow lining and a frayed shoulder strap. The flute has a few light scratches and there’s initials 'K.S.' engraved on the footjoint, plus a small green sticker inside the lid that says 'Lani'. I’m hoping to find the owner because this instrument clearly means a lot to someone and deserves to be back in the right hands.
