Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Farmington? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Farmington; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Farmington with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Found Paintings in Farmington, downtown near the Farmington Museum.

I found Paintings this morning around 11:20 AM while I was walking along Main Street in Farmington, near the Farmington Museum. A bundle of canvases was sitting by the curb, some with desert landscapes that caught my eye, others with bold color splashes. I didn’t know who they belonged to, so I set them on the nearby bench and hoped the owner would recognize them when they checked the site. If these look like yours, I’m glad to help reunite you with them through the posted listing.

Found two xylophones

I found two small xylophones in the lobby of the Farmington Civic Center around 2:15 p.m. on Tuesday. They were tucked behind an orange tote bag and still had the resonance of practice time, a light blue strap torn on one side and a sticky note with 'For class' half peeled off. The case is a dented blue plastic one; the keys look bright and intact. I know how much music gear can mean to a student or a kid, so I held onto them here on the site and hope the owner will recognize them.

found: utensils near Berg Park.

I found a bundle of utensils near Berg Park in Farmington around 11:30 am today, along the Animas River trail near the little market shed. The pan and forks were in a dented tin, a wooden spatula peeking out, and a napkin tucked in with a couple of plastic ties. They looked recently used but not dirty, clearly someone was in a hurry. I left them where I found them, hoping the owner will spot this listing and recognize the set.

Found Toasters in Farmington

I’m Daniel Martinez. I found a set of Toasters this morning, around 7:45 a.m., outside the Farmington Public Library on Main Street, near the San Juan College entrance. They’re two brushed stainless steel toasters, with a red detail and a small dent on one, as if they’d seen some morning rush. It looked like someone left them behind in a hurry, so I carried them into the library lobby and waited a moment, hoping the owner would claim them. I know how frustrating it is to misplace something you rely on day after day. If these belong to you, I hope you see this and know they’re safe here at the library front desk until claimed.

Neon orange dog harness with reflective stripes

I found a neon orange dog harness this morning around 9:15am in the parking lot behind Maplewood Café on Market Street in Farmington. It’s a medium, adjustable nylon harness with bright reflective stripes and a tiny enamel paw charm on the front D-ring, engraved with the initials 'LJ'. There’s a small nick on the left strap where the stitching is a bit frayed, but overall it’s in decent shape. I know how important a harness is for a pup's safety, and I hope to reunite it with its owner soon.

Silver pocket watch with floral engraving and chain

Found a silver pocket watch with a short chain this afternoon around 3:45pm outside the Old Mill Market on Farmington Ave, near the Town Green. The watch is about 2 inches in diameter, silver-toned with a slightly tarnished finish, and the crystal has a small crack along the edge. The back is engraved with a delicate floral pattern and the initials 'S.J.' in cursive, and it comes with a slim brown leather case that has a faint musty smell. I figured someone must be missing it, so I kept it safe and hoped to reunite it with its owner.
