Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Duluth / Superior? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Duluth / Superior; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Duluth / Superior with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Found CDs near Canal Park, Duluth

I found someone else's CDs on Canal Park’s walking path near the Aerial Lift Bridge in Duluth around 6:30 p.m. on Friday. There were about eight discs in a red jewel case with a few indie rock titles and one battered jazz compilation. One label is scribbled with a name, but most of the handwriting is smudged and hard to read. I picked them up and brought them to the Canal Park lost-and-found, hoping the owner will see this and come claim them soon.

Found Wild and Domestic in Duluth / Superior

Found yesterday at 2:50 p.m. on a park bench near the Aerial Lift Bridge in Canal Park, Duluth / Superior, Minnesota, United States. It’s a paperback titled Wild and Domestic, with coffee stains along the margins and a frayed spine. I was walking along the lake with my dog when I spotted it resting in the sun, abandoned on the bench. It felt like the kind of thing a traveler would miss and leave behind, and I figured the rightful owner would want it back as much as I do. I’m glad someone honest picked it up and I hope it reaches the person who needs it.

Found xylophones near Canal Park, Duluth

I found two xylophones this morning while walking along Harbor Drive near Canal Park in Duluth. It was about 9:15 AM today, after a light dusting of snow, when they caught my eye lying on the sidewalk with a small bag containing two mallets tucked beside them. The wooden bars are bright with a few scuffs, and one bears a blue sticker. I don’t know who they belong to, but I’d really like to help reunite them with their owner. Please reach out through the site if these are yours.

Found bus tickets near Canal Park, Duluth

I found someone’s bus tickets today while I was waiting for the eastbound bus near Canal Park in Duluth around 3:15 p.m. on Saturday. The tickets were tucked beneath a bench by a lamppost, crumpled from rain and traffic, with a bold blue header and a few transit stamps still legible. They looked like something a hurried traveler would rely on, maybe a weekend trip to visit family or a friend across the state. I pictured the owner chasing after the bus as the doors closed, and I felt a surge of responsibility to do the right thing. I kept them safe and posted this listing in case they’re scanning.

Mid-century walnut coffee table with brass legs

I found a mid-century walnut coffee table this afternoon around 4:15 pm, tucked near the Fitger's complex on East Superior Street in Duluth. It’s about 40 inches long and 18 inches wide, with slender brass hairpin legs and a glass top over the wood. The finish is warm and shows a few scratches plus a faint water ring, and there’s a tiny chip on the underside edge that only shows when you flip it over. It looks sturdy, and I kept thinking someone might be missing it. If this is yours, email me at [email protected] and we’ll arrange a pickup.
