Lost your phone? Step-by-step recovery

Carrier contacts, Find My / Find My Device, and the local steps to recover or secure a lost phone.

Losing your phone in Columbia is stressful, but acting quickly improves your odds of getting it back and limits the damage if it's gone for good. Work through these steps in order.

  1. Locate it remotely. Use Find My (iPhone) or Find My Device (Android) from another phone or computer to see the phone on a map, play a sound, and mark it as lost. Lost Mode locks the device and shows a contact message on the screen.
  2. Lock and message it. If it's nearby, the sound may be enough. If it isn't, enable Lost Mode and add a phone number where you can be reached.
  3. Call your carrier. Report the phone lost so they can suspend service and block the IMEI. This stops anyone running up charges and flags the handset across networks.
  4. Change key passwords. Update your email, banking, and social passwords, especially if the phone wasn't locked. Sign the device out of those accounts where you can.
  5. Report it locally. File a report with the police non-emergency line for Columbia — a crime reference number is often required for insurance claims.
  6. Post a listing. Add a lost-phone listing for Columbia so anyone who finds it can reach you privately.

Keep checking the map periodically — a phone that's off may reappear when it's charged.

Black Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones with dented ear cup

I lost my black Sony WH-1000XM4 wireless headphones yesterday around 3pm near the Missouri Theatre on Broadway in downtown Columbia. It's the matte black version with a gold Sony logo, and there’s a small dent on the right ear cup and a faint coffee stain along the headband. Inside the headband I stuck a tiny blue sticker with my initials 'PP'—it’s still there, barely noticeable. They mean a lot to me because they help with editing and they were a gift from my sister, so I’d be really grateful to get them back.

Black iPhone 12 in Speck case, pink PopSocket

I lost my black iPhone 12 in a Speck case with a pink PopSocket yesterday around 3pm near the Starbucks on Broadway in downtown Columbia. It has a small crack along the bottom edge and the screen protector is peeling a bit. Inside are family photos and a few voice memos from my mom—it's sentimental and I really need it back. The phone is otherwise in good condition and it stands out because of the pink PopSocket. If you found it, please reply here or email me at [email protected]. Thank you.

Red Anker Soundcore mini speaker

I lost my red Anker Soundcore mini Bluetooth speaker yesterday around 3pm. It was in my black tote after I stopped by Bean & Brew on Broadway in downtown Columbia. It’s a palm-sized speaker, about 3 inches long, with a small dent on the bottom edge and a blue sticker of a cat on the back. The charging port cover is a bit stiff, but the sound is great. It has sentimental value—it was a gift from my grandmother. If anyone found it, I’d really appreciate getting it back; I’m hoping for good news from someone nearby.

Nintendo Switch OLED with neon Joy-Cons

I lost my Nintendo Switch OLED yesterday around 3pm outside the GameStop entrance at The Mall in Columbia on Little Patuxent Parkway. It's the white OLED model in a gray protective case, with neon red/blue Joy-Cons. On the back there's a blue cat sticker with my initials 'AP' and a small dent at the top edge from a drop last week. The screen has a faint scratch and the case shows light wear, but it's otherwise in good condition. This device was a gift from my sister and means a lot to me; I really need it back—if you find it, please email [email protected].

Lost black Beats wireless earphones in a small case left on a table near the window at the campus library in Columbia, SC.

I lost my black wireless earphones while studying at the campus library in Columbia last week. They are in a small case with 'Beats' written on it, and I think I might have left them on the table near the window. I've looked everywhere and I'm really hoping someone might have found them.
