Lost wallet or purse — immediate steps

The first moves to make when your wallet or purse goes missing — cards, ID, and protecting yourself from fraud.

A lost wallet or purse in Columbia / Jeff City means two jobs at once: stopping fraud and replacing what's gone. The first hour matters most.

  1. Freeze your cards. Open each bank's app and freeze or cancel every debit and credit card. Most apps let you lock a card instantly and order a replacement.
  2. Check for unfamiliar activity. Review recent transactions and report anything you didn't make.
  3. Protect your identity. If ID was inside, take steps to guard against identity theft and consider a fraud alert or protective registration.
  4. Replace your ID and licence. Start replacements for your driver's licence or ID card through the relevant authority for your area.
  5. Retrace and report. Contact the last places you visited in Columbia / Jeff City and report the loss to the police non-emergency line if it may have been stolen.
  6. Post a listing. Add a lost-wallet listing for Columbia / Jeff City — many wallets are handed in and reunited this way.

Brown Coach wallet with green interior

I lost my brown Coach leather wallet yesterday around 3pm near the Starbucks on Broadway in downtown Columbia. It’s a zip-around style, about the size of a standard billfold, with a bright green interior lining and a small coffee ring on the back. Inside I’ve got my Missouri driver's license, a few cards, and about $30 in cash, plus a photo tucked in the card slot. It was a gift from my mom and carries sentimental value, so I’m really hoping someone picked it up and can return it. If you find it, I can meet you near the MU bookstore or at the CVS on Broadway.

Blue lanyard keys with red carabiner

I lost my keys yesterday around 3pm near the Boone County Courthouse at Broadway and 9th in downtown Columbia. They're on a bright blue nylon lanyard with a red carabiner. There are about five keys—home, mailbox, and a bike-lock key—with a small yellow enamel heart sticker on one key and a tiny nick in another blade. A black USB drive dangles from the ring, and the lanyard is a bit frayed near the loop. This is the only set I carry, and I really need them back to get into my apartment and ride my bike to work today.

Black Ray-Ban glasses with blue temples

I lost my black Ray-Ban Wayfarer-style glasses yesterday around 3pm near the Missouri Theatre on 9th Street in Columbia. They're matte black with blue temple tips and clear prescription lenses; the left lens has a tiny scratch I didn't notice until later. The frames are a bit worn but still sturdy, and there's a small engraving on the inside of the right temple: 'AB'. They came with a brown leather case that has a faint coffee stain. These glasses mean a lot to me, they were a gift from my grandmother, and I really need to find them.

Black rectangular glasses with gold nose pads

I lost my black rectangular glasses yesterday around 3pm while leaving the MU Bookstore near the Student Center on University Ave in Columbia. They're medium-sized plastic frames with subtle gold nose pads and a tiny scratch on the left lens. There's a small blue dot on the inside of the right temple that should help identify them. These are my everyday pair for reading and driving, and I really need them back.
