Lost pet — how to find them fast

A fast, practical plan for finding a lost pet, plus the shelters and microchip registries to contact.

When a pet goes missing in Champaign Urbana, speed and visibility are everything. Most lost pets are found close to home within the first day.

  1. Search the immediate area. Check nearby gardens, sheds, and quiet spots. Bring treats and a familiar item, and call calmly.
  2. Alert the microchip registry. Flag your pet as missing with the microchip database so your details are current if they're scanned.
  3. Call local shelters and vets. Phone shelters, pounds, and veterinary practices around Champaign Urbana and ask them to note your pet's description.
  4. Post online and on lost-pet databases. Share clear photos in local community groups and lost-pet services.
  5. Put up visible notices. A simple poster with a photo, the area, and a contact number still works.
  6. Post a listing. Add a lost-pet listing for Champaign Urbana so found-pet reports nearby surface alongside yours.

Blue cockatiel with yellow head; lost near UIUC Main Library

Hi, I’m Priya Kapoor. I lost my blue cockatiel with a yellow head yesterday around 3pm near the UIUC Main Library on Green Street. He’s about the size of a small pigeon, with a bright yellow crest and orange cheek patches, and he’s very friendly once he sees a familiar face. He also has a tiny silver leg band on his right leg with the numbers 4-7, and there’s a small white patch on his left wing that makes him easy to spot. If you spot him, email me at [email protected] so we can arrange a safe return; he’s my indoor pet and means a lot to me, I’d really appreciate it.

Yellow cockatiel with orange cheeks, lost near campus

I lost my yellow cockatiel, Sunny, yesterday around 3pm. He's a small parrot, about the size of a sparrow, with bright yellow feathers, gray wings, and distinct orange cheek patches. He wears a light blue plastic leg band with the number 24-BR. I last saw him near the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts on Goodwin Ave, then he flew toward Lincoln Street by the campus library. It has sentimental value—he was a gift from my daughter, and we’re really worried about him. If you spot him, please reach out. I’m ready to come collect him from Champaign Urbana as soon as possible.

Lost bright yellow parakeet with blue cheeks

I lost my bright yellow parakeet yesterday around 3pm. He's tiny, about the size of a sparrow, with teal-blue tail feathers and a blue patch on his cheeks, and a blue leg band with a small silver tag on his right leg. We were on the balcony near the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts on University Avenue in Champaign when a gust of wind swept him away. This bird means a lot to my family—it's my daughter's pet and it was a gift from my grandmother, so we’d really appreciate getting him back.

Bearded dragon, tan with orange stripes

I lost my bearded dragon yesterday around 3pm near the Illini Union on Green Street in Champaign-Urbana. He's about 8 inches long, tan with bright orange stripes along the sides, and his beard darkens when he's stressed. There's a tiny blue dot behind his left eye and a slight kink at the tip of his tail. This little guy is my daughter's pet and means a lot to us; we're really worried and hoping to bring him home soon. If you see him, I'm around the Krannert Center area and can meet near the library or campus bus stop to arrange pickup.
