Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Bath? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Bath; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Bath with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Found radios near Bath Abbey.

I found radios this morning in Bath, United Kingdom. On Sunday around 10:25 a.m., I spotted two portable radios lying on a bench outside Bath Abbey, not far from the entrance to the market. It had just stopped drizzling, and it seemed someone might be nearby looking for them too. They look a bit worn, with cords tangled and one small dial cover missing. I left them in a safe corner of the same area, hoping the owner will see this post and come forward.

Found postcards in Bath, Bath, United Kingdom

Hi, I’m Olivia Bennett. I found a neat stack of old postcards this morning around 9:10 AM while wandering along the River Avon near Bath Abbey. They were tucked beneath a bench by Pulteney Bridge, a little water-stained after the drizzle, but otherwise intact. The photos show Bath landmarks—the Circus and the Royal Crescent—and they look like they belong to someone who loves this city. I didn’t want to keep them; I want the owner to have a chance to reclaim them here.

Found: Driver's License near Bath Spa Station.

On Friday at 7:45 pm I found a Driver's License lying on the pavement near Bath Spa Station. I picked it up and kept it safe, hoping the owner would come across this post and recognise it quickly. The card shows a smiling photo and a name I won't spell out here, which makes the moment feel personal and urgent for whoever lost it. From Bath, Bath, United Kingdom, in the late-evening quiet, I imagined the owner's worry turning into relief as someone holds onto it. If this belongs to you, I hope you'll see this and reclaim it soon.

Penguin Classics hardcover found near Pulteney Bridge

I found a Penguin Classics hardcover copy of The Stranger this afternoon around 2:15pm near the Pulteney Bridge in Bath. The cover is a navy blue cloth with gold embossing on the spine and a slightly worn feel from frequent reading. The pages are a touch yellowed, and a red ribbon bookmark sticks out from Chapter 12. Inside the front cover there’s a Bath Guild Library stamp and a pencil note that says 'For Jamie' in neat handwriting. If this sounds like your book, I’d love to help you get it back.

Found leopard gecko near Pulteney Bridge

I found a small leopard gecko this morning around 9:15am near the steps by Pulteney Bridge in Bath. It’s about 4 inches long from snout to tail, with sandy-green skin and brown spots, and the tail tapers to a pale blue ring near the base. There’s a tiny scar on its left flank, and the skin looks healthy and smooth overall. It seemed calm when I picked it up and I offered a little water, and it stayed still in my cupped hands. If this is your pet, I’d really love to help get it back to you—please reach out with a description of your gecko.

Arturia MiniLab MkII 25-key MIDI keyboard with blue USB cable

I found this this afternoon around 3:15 pm outside Bath Abbey on North Parade. It's a compact Arturia MiniLab MkII 25-key MIDI keyboard, black matte finish with a few light nicks on the corner. A blue USB cable is still plugged in, and there’s a small purple star sticker on the top edge with the initials EM. It looks like someone uses it for practice or small gigs, and it would be awesome to reunite the owner—these gear setups feel sentimental as well as practical. If it’s yours, message me and we’ll sort out getting it back to you.
