Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Western IL? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Western IL; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Western IL with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Found: sports equipment in Macomb, IL

Last Tuesday at about 6:30 p.m., I found a bag of equipment outside the WIU Student Recreation Center in Macomb, Illinois. The blue duffel held gear for several sports: a basketball with scuffs, a couple of rackets, shin guards, a sweat-stained water bottle, and a torn gym towel. It looked like someone had just finished a pickup game and rushed off, leaving a jumble of items that don’t belong to any single sport. I parked it behind the information desk in the Rec Center lobby, hoping the owner would recognize it, and I’ll leave it there for whoever comes looking.

Vintage stamp collection in red velvet case

I found a vintage stamp collection this morning around 9:15 AM outside the Western Illinois University Library on University Drive in Macomb, IL. It’s in a small black leather display case with a rich red velvet lining. Inside are about 40 stamps from the 1950s-60s, including a couple of mint-condition U.S. airmail stamps, plus a tiny brass magnifying glass clipped to the lid. There’s a faded handwritten label tucked into the insert that reads 'H. L. Kline, 1958.' The case has a few scratches and the clasp feels a bit loose. It seems like something a serious collector would cherish, and I’d love to help the owner get it back.

Blue Omron BP monitor in compact case

I found a small digital blood pressure monitor in a dark blue zippered case this afternoon around 3:15pm. It’s an Omron brand, the case is a bit scuffed at the corners, and inside there’s the cuff, a couple of instruction cards, and a white microfiber sleeve. There’s a blue Velcro strap attached to the cuff and a small sticker on the inside lid with the initials 'A.N.'—a helpful identifying feature. I found it in the parking lot behind the CVS on Main Street in downtown Galesburg, IL, which is in Western IL. If this belongs to you, send me a message so we can arrange a safe return.

Vintage stamp album with red leather spine

Found this vintage stamp album this afternoon around 3pm in the parking lot behind a small antique shop on 16th Street in Rock Island, Western IL. The album has a red leather spine with gold lettering that’s worn, and the cover shows a few scuffs. Inside, there are stamps from the 1920s to the 1950s, including a block of German stamps and a tiny pressed flower tucked between pages. On the back cover is a bright green sticker with the number 27 and a slightly bent corner. I imagine it means something to a real collector, so if this belongs to you, I’d be happy to return it.

Blue nylon dog collar with star tag found

Found a blue nylon dog collar this afternoon around 2:15pm behind the Hy-Vee on 16th Street in Moline, Western IL. It's a medium-sized collar, vivid cobalt blue, with a small silver star-shaped tag engraved 'Rufus' and a tiny bone-shaped charm. The collar looks relatively new, not much wear, and the tag is a bit faded. I figured it must belong to a dog nearby who got loose, so I picked it up and kept it in a safe spot. If this belongs to you, the name tag should help verify. Happy to arrange a quick meet-up via the app so we can get this back to your pup.

Navy tote bag with pink scarf found downtown Quincy

I found a navy canvas tote this afternoon around 2:15 PM behind the downtown library on State Street, in Quincy, in Western Illinois. It's medium-sized, a bit worn, with tan leather bottom corners and a pink paisley scarf peeking from the inner pocket. Not sure who it belongs to, but I'd love to get it back to its owner—it seems important, maybe for work or school. If this sounds like yours, take a look and let me know some details to verify.
