Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Victoria? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Victoria; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Victoria with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

White AirPods Pro case with blue L3 sticker

Found a white AirPods Pro charging case this morning around 9:15am, outside the Royal BC Museum on Belleville Street near the Inner Harbour. The case is in good condition with a small scratch on the lid and a bright blue sticker labeled 'L3' on the back. I imagine someone is missing their earbuds and I'd love to help them get them back. If you think these belong to you, you can reach me at [email protected] and we can arrange a meetup near the harbour to return them.

Found violin in burgundy case near Inner Harbour

I found a violin this afternoon around 4:15pm near the Inner Harbour, tucked behind the Empress Hotel on Government Street in Victoria. It's a Yamaha 4/4 student model with a sunburst finish, light scratches along the back, and a small dent near the lower bout. The case is burgundy velvet-lined with a zipped closure. The bow has a bright blue wrap and the hair looks mildly frayed. Inside the lid there's a sticker with the initials 'MV' and a pencil note reading 'From Grandma.' The instrument seems playable, and I hope to reconnect it with its owner in Victoria soon.

Brown violin with blue ribbon near Munro's Books

I found a violin this afternoon around 3:25pm on the sidewalk in front of Munro's Books on Government Street in Victoria. It's a brown violin with a warm amber varnish, a few small scratches near the tailpiece, and a blue ribbon tied to the scroll. The black case is a bit scuffed, and the bow sits inside with a worn-looking horsehair. There's a small maple-leaf sticker on the case lid for a simple identifier. I’m keeping it safe for now and really hope to reunite it with its owner—this instrument likely means a lot to someone who plays. If this is yours, please reach out so I can hand it back.

Blue concert ticket found near Royal BC Museum

I found a blue concert ticket this afternoon around 2:45pm in front of the Royal BC Museum on Belleville Street, downtown Victoria. It's for Sunset Indie Night, printed on a white ticket with a blue border and a perforated edge; the event name is visible, and the barcode is still scannable if you hold it at the right angle. There's a small coffee stain on the back and the seat designation says GA. If you're the owner, I'm happy to meet nearby the museum or hand it over at a central spot in Victoria to get it back.

Dark brown leather belt with silver buckle

I found a dark brown leather belt this afternoon around 3:15pm near the Empress Hotel on Government Street in Victoria. It's about 95 cm long, medium width, with a silver buckle that has a tiny heart-shaped scratch and a worn inner edge where initials are stamped 'PK'. The belt is in good condition with light creasing from daily wear and a small scuff near the buckle. It was lying on the sidewalk just outside the hotel entrance, by the planter near the corner. I’d love to reunite it with its owner—if this sounds like yours, send me a message here and we can arrange a quick pickup.

Hand-painted ceramic vase with teal motif

I found this hand-painted ceramic vase this afternoon around 3:20pm on Government Street, right outside the Royal BC Museum near the Inner Harbour in Victoria. It's about 10 inches tall with a slender, slightly flared neck, teal glaze speckled with gold and a subtle crackle pattern in the glaze. The surface has a small patchy glaze irregularity that gives it character, and there's a signature that looks like 'Lina K.' on the bottom along with a tiny white enamel star sticker beside it. The vase appears to be in good condition overall. I know it's probably important to someone, and I’d be happy to see it safely returned to its owner.
