Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Valdosta? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Valdosta; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Valdosta with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Ray-Ban tortoiseshell glasses found near Valdosta Mall

Found a pair of Ray-Ban tortoiseshell glasses this afternoon around 3:15pm in the parking lot behind the Valdosta Mall on Baytree Road, near the Barnes & Noble entrance. They’re rectangular frames with a gold-tone bridge, and there’s a tiny engraving 'L.R.' on the inside of the left temple; the right lens has a faint scratch. They look like they’ve seen some sun, but overall they’re in decent shape. I figured someone might be worried, so I’m hoping to reunite them with their owner. If they’re yours, reply here and I’ll help you get them back.

Blue Anker Soundcore mini speaker

I found a blue Anker Soundcore Mini Bluetooth speaker this afternoon around 2:45pm, outside the CVS on North Ashley Street near Valdosta Mall. It’s palm-sized with a black grille and a blue fabric cover, and there’s a small dent on the top edge. The front has a faint Soundcore label and a black USB-C cable is still plugged in. There’s a tiny pineapple sticker on the cable that makes it easy to spot. I know these little gadgets can be sentimental or essential for daily routines, so I’d really like to reunite it with its owner. If this is yours, send me a note here and we can arrange a nearby pickup.

Gray and white hamster found near Publix on Troupe St

I found a tiny hamster this afternoon around 3:15 pm in the parking lot behind the Publix on Troupe Street in Valdosta. It’s a light gray hamster with a white belly, about the size of a ping-pong ball, and it has very long whiskers. There’s a small scar on its left hind leg from a past tumble, and a pale white patch on its right ear that makes it easy to identify. It was in a clear plastic travel carrier with green bedding and a tiny water bottle attached. I scooped it up and kept it safe here while I try to help it find its owner; if this sounds like yours, send a message and I can describe more details.

Gray Nike hoodie found near CVS on North Ashley St

Found a gray Nike hoodie this afternoon around 3:15pm behind the CVS on North Ashley Street, near the Valdosta Mall entrance. It's a men's size Large, heather gray fleece with a white Nike swoosh on the chest and a neon yellow zipper pull. The left sleeve has a small white stitched mountain outline, and there's a faint coffee stain near the hem from yesterday's rain. I picked it up and tucked it into my bag, hoping the owner will recognize it. If you're missing a hoodie like this, we can arrange pickup near CVS.

Found dog: small golden retriever mix, blue collar

I found a small golden retriever mix wandering near the Valdosta Mall on Baytree Road this afternoon around 3:30pm. He is about knee-high with a light golden coat and a white patch on his chest, and he has a blue collar with a round ID tag that reads 'Leia 246'. He seemed a bit thirsty and wagged his tail at everyone who stopped to say hi. I am posting here in case the owner is looking for her, because I know how upsetting it is to lose a furry friend.
