Lost pet — how to find them fast

A fast, practical plan for finding a lost pet, plus the shelters and microchip registries to contact.

When a pet goes missing in Topeka, speed and visibility are everything. Most lost pets are found close to home within the first day.

  1. Search the immediate area. Check nearby gardens, sheds, and quiet spots. Bring treats and a familiar item, and call calmly.
  2. Alert the microchip registry. Flag your pet as missing with the microchip database so your details are current if they're scanned.
  3. Call local shelters and vets. Phone shelters, pounds, and veterinary practices around Topeka and ask them to note your pet's description.
  4. Post online and on lost-pet databases. Share clear photos in local community groups and lost-pet services.
  5. Put up visible notices. A simple poster with a photo, the area, and a contact number still works.
  6. Post a listing. Add a lost-pet listing for Topeka so found-pet reports nearby surface alongside yours.

Leopard gecko with orange spots, fat tail

I lost my leopard gecko yesterday around 6pm. It’s about 5 inches long from nose to tail, with a pale tan body and bright orange spots along its back, and a chunky fat tail. There are two tiny white speckles on its left shoulder that help identify it. I think it slipped out when my cat knocked over the terrarium and went missing behind the couch. I last saw it near the Topeka Public Library on SW 10th Ave by the bike racks. This little guy is a beloved pet and my daughter's favorite; we’re really hoping to get it back.

Red PetSafe dog leash with pink paw-tag

I lost my red PetSafe 6-foot nylon dog leash yesterday around 3pm near the Target on Wanamaker Road in Topeka. It's bright red with a white reflective stripe, the handle is a bit bent, and there's a small tear near the metal clip. On the leash there's a tiny pink paw-print keychain tag I added for my dog's ID. This leash is sentimental because it was a gift from my sister after our rescue dog joined us last year. If anyone finds it, I’d be really grateful to get it back for my pup.

Cream rabbit with blue harness lost near library

I lost my cream-colored dwarf rabbit yesterday around 3pm in Topeka, near the Topeka Public Library on 10th Ave. He’s tiny, about the size of a loaf of bread, with super soft fur and a fluffy white tail. He was wearing a light blue fleece harness with a tiny silver bell, and if you look closely there’s a small orange dot on his left ear. He’s a shy but curious bun and was a gift from my daughter, so this is really sentimental for us—we’re hoping he’s somewhere safe and not too scared. If you’ve seen him, please drop me a message here; I’d be so grateful to get him back.
