Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Tallahassee? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Tallahassee; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Tallahassee with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Found black Ray-Ban Wayfarers with blue temples

I found a pair of glasses this afternoon around 2:15pm in the parking lot behind the Publix on Blairstone Road in Tallahassee. They’re black acetate Ray-Ban Wayfarers with bright blue temple tips, in decent condition but with a small scuff on the left temple. Inside the right temple, there’s an engraving that reads 'AK'—nice little clue. The glasses come with a soft black pouch but no hard case. If you know someone who’s missing a pair, I’d love to help get them back.

Grey canvas tote bag with pink tassel

I found this grey canvas tote bag (Miscellaneous Bags category) this afternoon around 3:15 pm in the parking lot behind the Trader Joe's on West Tennessee Street in Tallahassee. It's a medium-sized bag, about 12 by 14 inches, with a bright pink tassel on the zipper and a tiny rainbow sticker on the inner pocket. There’s a leather patch on the outside with the initials MK. I figured someone might be missing it, so I’m posting here to help get it back to its owner. If this belongs to you, drop a note here in the app and we can meet up nearby.

Teal dog collar with paw print, found near Cascades Park

I found a teal dog collar with a white paw print pattern this afternoon around 3:15pm by the Cascades Park entrance off Monroe Street in Tallahassee. It's a nylon adjustable collar, likely small, with a tiny enamel bone charm and a bright reflective stripe along the edge. There are a couple of scuffs on the durable buckle, but it's in good overall shape. If this belongs to your pup, I'm happy to meet up near the park to hand it over.

Hand-painted cobalt ceramic vase found near FSU Bookstore

I found a hand-painted ceramic vase this afternoon around 3:10pm outside the Florida State University Bookstore on West Call Street in Tallahassee. It's about 9 inches tall with a deep cobalt glaze, white interior, and gold speckles. There’s a tiny etched 'L' near the base and a small chip on the rim. The glaze is glossy and looks well-made, so I figured someone might be missing it after browsing the area today. If you recognize it, I’m happy to reunite it with you.

Keys on blue silicone cover with charm

Found a set of keys this afternoon around 1:50pm in the parking lot behind the Capitol on Adams Street, Tallahassee. They’re on a sturdy metal ring with a bright blue silicone cover on the main key and a tiny silver dolphin charm dangling from the ring; there are about five keys total plus a car key with a red plastic fob. The keys look a bit worn but functional, and I know losing keys can be stressful--this definitely seems like something someone needs back. If these are yours, send a message in the app and we can set up a safe pickup near downtown Tallahassee.

FSU student ID found near the Union

I found a Florida State University student ID card this afternoon around 3:15 pm in the parking lot behind the FSU Union on West Call Street, Tallahassee. The card is in a slightly scuffed black plastic sleeve with a blue edge, and the photo shows a person with short black hair in a blue polo. The name on the card is Alex Rivera. There’s a small Biology Club sticker on the back and a faint coffee stain near the bottom edge. I slipped it into a protective pouch and left it in the Lost & Found box at the campus police desk, hoping the owner will recognize it soon.
