Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Syracuse? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Syracuse; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Syracuse with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Found: Student ID in Syracuse, NY

Today, around 9:15 a.m., I found a Student ID lying on the sidewalk outside the Landmark Theatre in Armory Square, Syracuse. The card shows a photo, a school logo, and a name that looks familiar but not mine. I picked it up and tucked it into my pocket, hoping the owner would see this post and recognize it. It felt right to try to reunite someone with their ID after a busy morning near the bus stop and coffee carts along Jefferson Street. If this belongs to you, I’m hopeful you’ll claim it here so it can be returned safely.

Found: Pins in downtown Syracuse

I was wandering through Armory Square in Syracuse at 4:15 p.m. today, the brick storefronts catching the late afternoon light, when I spotted a small tin of pins spilled on the sidewalk outside a coffee shop. I picked them up and tucked them into my pocket, thinking they must belong to someone who just stepped inside. The stack includes a guitar pin, a enamel pin with a paw print, and a tiny safety-pin chain—clearly a little keepsake collection. If these are yours, the site can connect you with me so you can get them back near Clinton Square.

Black Travelon passport holder with red interior

I found a black Travelon passport holder with a red interior this afternoon around 3:15pm near the Destiny USA mall entrance on Clinton Street, Syracuse. It's a compact, zippered case about the size of a passport, with RFID protection and a tiny scuff on the bottom corner. Inside are a few cards and a faded boarding pass; there’s a small luggage tag loop still attached. If you’re missing it, please reach out with the approximate brand (Travelon), the last place you used it, or a distinguishing feature like the missing TSA badge. I’d love to help you get it back.

Mid-century oak coffee table with glass top

I found a mid-century oak coffee table with a glass top this afternoon around 4:15 pm in the Destiny USA parking lot off Destiny USA Drive, near the food court entrance. It's about 42 inches long and 24 inches wide, with a warm oak finish and a clear glass top that shows a few light scratches. There's a small dent on the front edge of the tabletop and a blue felt pad glued to the bottom of the back-right leg. Inside the table's lower shelf I spotted a faded sticker that reads 'Fragile Decor Co.' If anyone recognises it, I'd love to help get it back to its owner — it's in good shape and clearly cared for.

Found compact MIDI keyboard controller near Destiny USA

I found a compact MIDI keyboard controller this afternoon around 3:30pm outside the West Genesee Street entrance to Destiny USA. It's a 25-key USB-MIDI controller in matte black plastic, with a row of small blue LED pads and two knobs along the top edge. A short USB cable is still attached, and on the back edge there's a neon green sticker with the letters K9 plus a coffee-ring mark on the bottom corner. It looked to be in decent shape with no cracks, and it seems like someone spent time setting it up for a gig or practice. If this sounds like yours, I hope you see this and can claim it.
