Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in St Joseph? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for St Joseph; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for St Joseph with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Found memory cards near Patee House, St. Joseph

On Sunday around 2:30 p.m., I was tidying up the benches outside a cafe near the Patee House Museum when I spotted a small red memory-card case tucked beneath a bench. Inside were several memory cards, dusty from weather and foot traffic. It hit me how personal those files could be, and I hoped the rightful owner would see this listing and recognize their own memories. I’m leaving the cards here for now and will keep them safe until someone claims them through the site.

Silver bracelet with blue heart charm found

I found a silver bracelet this afternoon around 2:15 pm, sitting on the sidewalk by the Pony Express Museum on Felix Street in St Joseph. It's a slim stainless steel bracelet, about 7 inches long, with a blue enamel heart charm and a tiny star charm near the clasp. The bracelet is in good condition with just a few light scratches from pavement. I’m posting here in case the owner is missing it after a museum visit or downtown stroll. If this sounds like yours, I’d be glad to return it.

Gray Nike running shoes with lime-green accents

I found a pair of gray Nike running shoes this afternoon around 2:15pm in the parking lot behind the Walgreens on 7th Street, near the Patee House Museum in St Joseph. They're men's size 9, with lime-green accents and a small blue flame stitch on the heel. The left shoe has a tiny tear at the toe and the insoles show a scribbled RB mark. They look like they've been worn, but are in decent shape overall. I figured someone might be missing them, and I'd love to help reunite the owner—if these match your shoes, message me with the lace color and the exact heel pattern so we can coordinate a pickup near Market Street.

Bearded dragon found near riverfront park, St Joseph

I found a bearded dragon this afternoon around 2:45 pm near the riverfront park gazebo on 4th Street in St Joseph. It’s tan with orange-brown striping along the back, about 9 inches long from snout to tail, and it has a small dark beard patch under the chin that darkens when excited. The tail tapers lighter toward the tip. It seemed healthy and alert, and it calmly climbed onto my hand when I approached. If this belongs to someone, please reach out—I’d love to help you get your reptile home.

Silver bracelet with heart charm and initials engraved

I found a silver bracelet this afternoon around 2:45pm in St Joseph, near the fountain by the Patee House Museum on 2nd Street. It's a slender, about 7-inch sterling silver bracelet with a small heart charm and a tiny blue enamel bead. The lobster clasp is intact, and the inside of the heart charm is engraved with the initials 'K.L.' It has a few light scratches from wear, but overall it's in good condition. If this belongs to you, I'm happy to return it to its owner here in St Joseph; I know how sentimental a piece like this can be.

Nintendo Switch with neon Joy-Cons, found near 4th St

I found a Nintendo Switch this afternoon around 2:15pm in the parking lot behind Riverside Market on 4th Street, St Joseph. It’s in good condition overall, with neon red/blue Joy-Cons and a clear protective case. There’s a small fox sticker on the back and a faint scratch along the top edge of the screen protector, but the screen itself looks crisp. I know how much a console can mean to someone, so I’d like to get it back to its owner—maybe we could meet near the Civic Center Park fountain to verify and swap.
