Lost pet — how to find them fast

A fast, practical plan for finding a lost pet, plus the shelters and microchip registries to contact.

When a pet goes missing in South Florida, speed and visibility are everything. Most lost pets are found close to home within the first day.

  1. Search the immediate area. Check nearby gardens, sheds, and quiet spots. Bring treats and a familiar item, and call calmly.
  2. Alert the microchip registry. Flag your pet as missing with the microchip database so your details are current if they're scanned.
  3. Call local shelters and vets. Phone shelters, pounds, and veterinary practices around South Florida and ask them to note your pet's description.
  4. Post online and on lost-pet databases. Share clear photos in local community groups and lost-pet services.
  5. Put up visible notices. A simple poster with a photo, the area, and a contact number still works.
  6. Post a listing. Add a lost-pet listing for South Florida so found-pet reports nearby surface alongside yours.

Yellow cockatiel with orange cheeks near Las Olas

I lost my yellow cockatiel named Sunny yesterday around 3pm. I was walking along Las Olas Boulevard, near the Starbucks and the Riverwalk in Fort Lauderdale, when a gust from a passing boat startled him and he zipped up into a palm tree and vanished. He’s about 12 inches from beak to tail, mostly bright yellow with gray wings and those distinctive orange cheek patches. He wears a blue leg band on his right leg engraved with 'Sunny', and there’s a small dent on the upper part of his beak that you can feel if you touch it. This bird is a real part of our family; it was a gift from my sister and carries a lot of sentimental value. If you spot him, please leave a note in the app so I can reconnect.

Lost tabby cat with blue collar near Lincoln Road

I lost my gray tabby cat, Pixel, yesterday around 3pm. Pixel is medium-sized, short-haired, white chest and paws, green eyes, and a blue reflective collar with a tiny silver bell. There’s a small notch in his left ear and a faint scar on his right hind leg. Last seen near Lincoln Road Mall in South Beach, around the Walgreens at 1100 Lincoln Road and along the boardwalk; I’m really worried—he’s my indoor cat and I miss him a lot.

Lost dog: Black Lab mix with red collar

I lost my black Labrador mix, about 65 pounds, yesterday around 3pm near Lincoln Road in Miami Beach. He's got a shiny black coat with a small white patch on his chest, and a bright red collar with a blue bone-shaped tag. There’s a noticeable scar behind his right ear, and he tends to limp a little on his left hind leg after an old injury. He’s friendly once he knows you, but he can be wary of strangers, so he might back away at first. This dog means everything to me—he’s family and has a lot of sentimental value. If you’ve seen him or picked him up, please reach out; I’ll come to meet you anywhere in South Florida to bring him home.
