Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Sierra Vista? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Sierra Vista; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Sierra Vista with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

FOUND Holiday Decorations in Sierra Vista, Arizona

I spotted a bundle of holiday decorations outside Sierra Vista Mall, near the main entrance by the Vista Theater, at around 6:30 p.m. last Friday. The garlands were tangled with a string of lights and a bright red ribbon, all in a knotted plastic bag. It made me smile to think someone had been setting up for the season, and I wanted to help return them to their rightful owner. I’m leaving them here on the site in case the owner sees this and recognizes their decorations.

Found sheet music in Sierra Vista near Fort Huachuca.

On Tuesday around 5:45 pm I found a stack of sheet music on a bench near the Fort Huachuca Main Gate. The binder is spiral-bound, the pages a bit wrinkled, with a blue cover that shows years of practice. I paused because I imagined a musician finishing rehearsal in the fading light, realizing the sheet music was missing. The evening air held a desert scent, and the quiet street made the discovery feel oddly intimate. I'm posting this in case someone is missing a folder of songs and markings, maybe a recital piece or a choir selection. If this sounds like yours, please take a look.

Found paperback travel guide with handwritten notes

I found a paperback travel guide this afternoon around 2:15 pm outside the Sierra Vista Public Library on Fry Boulevard, near the main entrance. It's a tan Lonely Planet Spain 2019 edition, about 6x9 inches, with a creased spine and yellow highlighter marks in the margins. A cactus-shaped bookmark is wedged between pages and there’s a small red sticker with the initials 'M.R.' on the back cover. It's clearly been used, and it feels like it belonged to someone who was planning a trip—I imagine it holds stories. If this is yours, send me a note here and we can arrange a pickup.

Golden-brown guinea pig with red harness found near Safeway

I found a guinea pig this afternoon around 2:15pm in the parking lot behind the Safeway on Fry Boulevard, Sierra Vista. It's about 9 inches long, mostly golden brown with white patches, and it's wearing a small red harness with a tiny bell. The guinea pig has a distinctive white patch on its left flank and a tiny nick behind its right ear. It seems curious but a little skittish, and I know someone must be worried about their pet. If you recognize him, shoot me a message at [email protected] so I can help reunite him with his family.

Red sunburst snare drum found behind Sierra Vista Public Library

I found a red sunburst 14x5.5 inch snare drum this morning around 9:30am in the parking lot behind the Sierra Vista Public Library on Colonel Smith Road. It’s a Pearl snare with chrome hardware and a slightly dusty head. There’s a small cactus design sticker on the shell and a faint dent on the rim, which should help the owner spot it quickly. If this belongs to you, I’d love to get it back to its rightful owner—community bands deserve their gear back.

Green parakeet with red leg band found

I found a bright green parakeet with a red leg band this afternoon around 4pm near the Starbucks at Fry Blvd and 7th Street in Sierra Vista. The bird is small, maybe the size of a palm, with a cheerful chatter and a few blue-tinted flight feathers under its wings. The red leg band is clearly visible and it’s stamped with the numbers 861, which should help a lot with identifying its owner. It seems healthy and curious, pecking at my finger when I offered a seed treat. If this is your bird, please message me with a photo or the leg-band details so I can get it back to you.
