Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Santa Fe / Taos? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Santa Fe / Taos; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Santa Fe / Taos with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Found dolls near Santa Fe Plaza, NM

I found these dolls this afternoon around 3:15 p.m., near Santa Fe Plaza, between the San Miguel Mission and the nearby adobe storefronts. One is a handmade cloth doll with beaded hair and a bright floral dress, the other a porcelain-faced figure with painted eyes. They carry a lot of personality, and I can imagine a child or collector missing them and feeling hopeful someone will read this. If these belong to you, please leave a note on the site so they can find their way home.

Found Travel Bags near the Santa Fe Plaza.

On Monday at 4:15 pm, I was leaving the Santa Fe Plaza area when I spotted two travel bags tucked behind a bench near the fountain. The set includes a medium black rolling suitcase and a navy duffel with red piping. Both look well-used but sturdy, with a leather tag on the duffel that’s worn and hard to read. I checked the pockets for an ID and couldn’t read any name clearly. I brought them to the park's lost-and-found desk and left a note in one pocket, hoping the owner will see this listing and claim them. It felt strange to carry someone else’s things, but I wanted to do the right thing and get them back to their owner.

FOUND USB Drives in Santa Fe / Taos, NM

I found several USB drives tucked under a bench near the Santa Fe Plaza around 2:30 PM on a sunny Tuesday. The drives are labeled with a university folder and a few personal project filenames, so I figured they belong to someone who’ll recognize them. I’ve kept them safe and posted here in case the owner sees this. I hope the right person spots it and can identify what’s on these drives.

Keys with blue guitar-pick keychain

I found a set of keys this morning around 8:05am in the parking lot behind the Santa Fe Plaza, near La Fonda on the Plaza. The keys are on a round silver keyring with two house keys (one looks like a Yale, the other a Schlage) and a Honda car key with a red plastic head. There's a blue enamel guitar-pick-shaped keychain with a tiny hummingbird sticker that makes the bunch easy to spot. The whole set is in good condition, with a bit of wear on the fob, and it clearly belongs to someone who uses this area a lot. I know how stressful it is to lose keys, so I figured I'd post this and help get them back to their owner; if you're the owner, please reach out.

Olive green North Face backpack found near Santa Fe Plaza

I found this olive green North Face Borealis backpack this afternoon around 3:45pm, tucked behind a bench near the Santa Fe Plaza by the Palace of the Governors on Lincoln Avenue. It's a standard-size pack with a dark gray bottom and bright orange zipper pulls on the main compartment and front pocket. A small embroidered sun-and-mountain patch decorates the front, and the left shoulder strap has a tiny fray near the seam. Inside I found a blue spiral notebook with a University of New Mexico sticker and a charger cable coiled in the side pocket. I know how easy it is to panic over a lost bag—if this is yours, email me at [email protected] with a detail only you would know about it, and we’ll sort a safe handoff.

Blue North Face backpack with orange zippers

Found a blue North Face backpack this afternoon around 2:15pm, lying on the sidewalk outside the Santa Fe Plaza along Lincoln Ave near the Plaza Café. It's a standard school-size backpack, deep blue with bright orange zipper pulls and a small pine-tree patch on the front. The fabric shows a few scuffs from the street, but the zippers still work, and there's a padded laptop sleeve inside plus a mesh water-bottle pocket on the side. Inside the main pocket I saw a faded sticker of a mountain range and a reusable notebook. I'd love to get this back to its owner—it's clearly been cared for and I assume the owner will want it back too. If this is yours, reply here and we can arrange a quick drop-off or meetup.
