Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in San Antonio? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for San Antonio; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for San Antonio with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Found postcards near the River Walk

On Saturday at 2:35 p.m., I found a stack of postcards on a bench near the River Walk by Alamo Plaza in San Antonio, Texas. They show old scenes of the city and a few handwritten notes. I imagine they were meant for someone visiting or reconnecting with a friend, and I have kept them safe here in case the owner sees this. I hope the owner recognizes them and retrieves them through the site.

Found holiday decorations near Market Square, downtown San Antonio.

While grabbing groceries last Tuesday afternoon, I spotted a plastic tote behind the entrance to my apartment building in San Antonio, around 5:20 p.m. It held a jumble of holiday decorations: garlands, red-and-green lights, and a snowy centerpiece with a chipped base. I asked a few neighbors if they belonged to them, but no one claimed them. They looked like they’d last been used for a family gathering and deserved a good home this season. If these are yours, they’re tucked by the building’s Market Square entrance until you claim them on the site.

Small rabbit with blue collar found near River Walk

I found a small rabbit this afternoon around 3:15pm near the River Walk by the Arneson River Theatre, downtown San Antonio. It has a soft tan coat with a white belly and is about the size of a grapefruit. The rabbit is wearing a light blue collar with a tiny silver bell, and there’s a small crescent-shaped scar on its right hind leg plus a white patch on its nose—two features that might help identify it. I kept it gently in a breathable carrier while I searched for a nearby spot to leave it safe, hoping to reunite it with its owner. If this belongs to someone, I’d really love to help get it back.

Blue U.S. passport found near River Walk

I found a blue U.S. passport this afternoon around 2:30pm on the sidewalk outside the Starbucks by the River Walk near the Arneson River Theatre in San Antonio. The cover is the usual dark blue with the gold seal, a bit worn from travel, and the corners are slightly creased. There's a tiny coffee stain on the back and a small dent along the bottom edge. I know how important this is for the person it belongs to, and I want to help get it back to them—if you think this might be yours, share a detail that only you would know from your passport so we can confirm ownership.

Found Rode Wireless GO II mic kit near Alamo Plaza

I found a compact Rode Wireless GO II mic kit this afternoon around 4:15pm in the parking lot behind the Alamo on Alamo Plaza. It’s all black, with two small transmitters that have tiny red dot indicators and a matching receiver, tucked in a blue neoprene sleeve. The kit includes the two transmitters, receiver, USB-C cables, and a small black hard case with 'Rode' on it. I wandered back through the area and figured someone might be missing gear after the riverwalk crowds by the Alamo, so I’m putting this up here. If you think it’s yours, share a distinctive feature about your gear—like the label on the case or a sticker—and we can arrange a quick pickup.

Found green parakeet near River Walk, San Antonio

Found a small green parakeet this afternoon around 3pm along the San Antonio River Walk near La Villita. It's about the size of my palm, bright emerald feathers with a yellow belly, and a blue patch on the wings. It has a white ring on its left leg and a tiny chipped beak from a sidewalk scrape, which makes it easy to distinguish. I picked him up after he perched on my shoulder and calmed down once I offered some water from a bottle. I'm keeping him safe in a cardboard bird carrier and would love to reunite him with his owner—someone must be missing a bright, talkative buddy.
