Lost pet — how to find them fast

A fast, practical plan for finding a lost pet, plus the shelters and microchip registries to contact.

When a pet goes missing in Richmond, speed and visibility are everything. Most lost pets are found close to home within the first day.

  1. Search the immediate area. Check nearby gardens, sheds, and quiet spots. Bring treats and a familiar item, and call calmly.
  2. Alert the microchip registry. Flag your pet as missing with the microchip database so your details are current if they're scanned.
  3. Call local shelters and vets. Phone shelters, pounds, and veterinary practices around Richmond and ask them to note your pet's description.
  4. Post online and on lost-pet databases. Share clear photos in local community groups and lost-pet services.
  5. Put up visible notices. A simple poster with a photo, the area, and a contact number still works.
  6. Post a listing. Add a lost-pet listing for Richmond so found-pet reports nearby surface alongside yours.

Lost 'Wild and Domestic' in Richmond, IN

Hi, I’m Lena Parker. I lost 'Wild and Domestic' this afternoon around 5:10 PM outside the Richmond Plaza on North 5th Street, in Richmond, Indiana near the Depot District. I had it in a light backpack while walking from the grocery store to my car, and a gust must have torn the pages from my bag. I checked the sidewalk and nearby benches, but it vanished; the paperback is a favorite and easy to replace, but it would mean a lot to find it. If you come across it, please hold onto it for me.

Beagle mix with tan coat, lost near Carytown

I lost my beagle mix, Niko, yesterday around 3pm. He is about 28 pounds, with a short tan coat, white chest, and a tiny white patch on his left paw. He is wearing a blue harness with a reflective stripe and a bone-shaped tag reading 'Niko'. I last saw him by the VMFA parking lot off Cary Street in Richmond, and he wandered toward the Carytown shops on West Broad Street. This dog is my best friend; I rescued him as a puppy, and he means the world to me. If you spot him, text me right away--I'm really hoping to bring him home tonight.

Red-eared slider turtle Archie with blue dot

I lost my red-eared slider turtle Archie yesterday around 3pm near Cary Street and the VMFA area in Richmond. He's about 4 inches from head to tail, with a bright green shell and yellow streaks, and distinct red patches behind his ears. There's a small blue paint dot on the left edge of his shell and a tiny dent on the back from a rough fall years ago. He's been with me for 3 years and is basically family, so I'm really worried and hoping for his return. If you’ve seen him around James River Park, Carytown, or the VMFA area, please get in touch— I’d be incredibly grateful to have him back.
