Lost pet — how to find them fast

A fast, practical plan for finding a lost pet, plus the shelters and microchip registries to contact.

When a pet goes missing in Portland, speed and visibility are everything. Most lost pets are found close to home within the first day.

  1. Search the immediate area. Check nearby gardens, sheds, and quiet spots. Bring treats and a familiar item, and call calmly.
  2. Alert the microchip registry. Flag your pet as missing with the microchip database so your details are current if they're scanned.
  3. Call local shelters and vets. Phone shelters, pounds, and veterinary practices around Portland and ask them to note your pet's description.
  4. Post online and on lost-pet databases. Share clear photos in local community groups and lost-pet services.
  5. Put up visible notices. A simple poster with a photo, the area, and a contact number still works.
  6. Post a listing. Add a lost-pet listing for Portland so found-pet reports nearby surface alongside yours.

Blue-yellow budgie with leg band L-103

I lost my blue-yellow budgie yesterday around 3pm after a window screen snagged and I was rushing out of my apartment on West Burnside Street in Portland, near Powell's City of Books. He's small, about the size of a canary, with a bright cobalt blue tail and a pale yellow chest; a silver leg band with 'L-103' on his left leg. He has one peculiar white patch on his left wing. He’s been part of our family for years and the moment he vanished I felt my heart drop—he’s incredibly friendly and chatty, so I’m worried he might be scared and perched nearby waiting to be called. If you spot him, please message me; I’d be forever grateful to have him back.

Leopard gecko with blue spots, orange body, lighter tail

I lost my leopard gecko yesterday around 3pm after I briefly stepped out of the living room. It slipped out from under the sofa near my apartment by Powell's Books on Burnside in Downtown Portland. The gecko is about 4 inches long, orange with bright blue spots along its back, and a slightly lighter tail. It has a tiny white scar above its left nostril and a chipped toenail on the right front foot. It lives in a clear glass terrarium with a cork hide and a small heat lamp; I’m worried because it’s shy and relies on warm spots to feel safe. If you see it, please contact me—this little guy is really special to me.

Tan-and-white terrier mix, blue collar

I lost my tan-and-white terrier mix yesterday around 3pm after walking near SE Clinton Street and 36th Ave in Portland. He’s about 18 pounds, with a blue nylon collar and a red heart-shaped tag that reads 'Milo'. He has a crooked left ear and a tiny white star on his left shoulder. Milo is friendly but gets anxious around bikes, and I’m really worried he’ll wander off farther. If you’ve seen him, please get in touch—he’s been my constant companion since I adopted him last year and really means the world to me.
