Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Port Huron? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Port Huron; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Port Huron with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Found CDs in Port Huron

I found a dusty stack of CDs on the curb outside the Port Huron Public Library at 7:10 p.m. last Friday, near the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse along Lake Street. The case is a scratched black sleeve with a mix of classic rock and indie tracks. I kept them safe on my porch, hoping they'd be claimed, but realized today they belong to someone else. These discs carry memories, and I'd be thrilled to help their owner reconnect with them.

Found trading cards along Blue Water River Walk, Port Huron

I found a bundle of trading cards along the Blue Water River Walk near downtown Port Huron this morning around 8:15 a.m. It's a mixed pile from different sports—baseball, basketball, and a couple of soccer cards—with glossy edges and a few creases from a light rain on the pavement. They were tucked under a bench by the river, probably dropped in a hurry by someone who loves collecting or trading with friends. I picked them up and figured someone would be happier seeing this post than not knowing where their cards are. I’m leaving them here so the rightful owner can claim them through the site.

Found Holiday Decorations in Port Huron

Early this morning, around 8:10 a.m., I was walking along the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse area in Port Huron when I spotted a box of holiday decorations abandoned by the curb. A tangle of garlands, a string of red lights, and a small wrapped bag lay by a bench. I picked them up and kept them safe, hoping to help reunite them with their owner through this site. If these are yours, please reach out so we can arrange a proper handoff.

Navy blue North Face jacket with orange zipper

I found a navy blue North Face jacket this afternoon around 3:15pm, lying behind the Riverwalk along Water Street in Port Huron. It's a men's size L puffer with a bright orange zipper pull and a small seagull embroidery patch on the left sleeve. The jacket shows light wear, a couple of loose threads at the cuffs, and a faint coffee stain on the inner pocket, but the exterior is clean overall. It looked like someone might have dropped it during a walk along the river. If this is yours, shoot me a message and we can arrange a pickup in downtown Port Huron.

Sunburst acoustic guitar in black gig bag

I found a sunburst acoustic guitar this afternoon around 2:15pm outside the Port Huron Public Library on McMorran Boulevard. It's in a well-worn black gig bag with a blue strap. The guitar has a few cosmetic nicks along the bottom edge and a small dent on the headstock. Inside the soundhole there's a faded sticker with the initials 'J.S.' and the label reads 'Yamaha FG-800.' I figure someone in Port Huron might be missing it and I'd love to help reunite it with its owner.

Navy and white striped duvet cover set, queen

I found this afternoon around 3:15pm in the parking lot behind Lakeside Park on Military Street, Port Huron. It’s a queen-size duvet cover set in navy with white stripes, made of soft cotton, and it’s clean enough that it doesn’t smell off or stained. There’s a tiny anchor embroidery on the bottom corner and a sturdy navy zipper that’s easy to spot if you’re looking for it. The set includes one duvet cover and two pillowcases, all in good condition with no pills or pulls. If the owner recognizes it, I’d be glad to help reunite you with it.
