Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Plattsburgh-Adirondacks? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Plattsburgh-Adirondacks; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Plattsburgh-Adirondacks with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Found: Travel Visas near Plattsburgh Amtrak

I found a folder labeled Travel Visas yesterday at 4:15 PM near the Plattsburgh Amtrak station, along the riverfront. The brown leather cover was scuffed, and a few visa pages peeked out between the pages. It hit me how easily a trip can be upended by a missing document, and I felt a mix of concern and responsibility as I held onto it. I’m hopeful the owner will see this and claim their papers soon, and that the trip plans can still go ahead.

Found Holiday Decorations in Plattsburgh-Adirondacks

I was walking along the Plattsburgh waterfront near the Champlain Centre Mall entrance in Plattsburgh-Adirondacks, New York, around 7:20 p.m. on Sunday when I spotted a plastic tote with holiday decorations tucked behind a bench near the Adirondack-styled street lamps. The bundle included a string of multicolor lights, a wreath, and a few ornaments still in their plastic wrap. It looked like someone had been decorating for the season and forgot to grab them on the way out. I gathered them and left a note here so the owner can find them. I hope they’re reunited with their decorations soon.

Framed watercolor landscape with gold frame

I found a framed watercolor landscape this afternoon around 2:15pm outside The Grateful Goat cafe on Market Street, Plattsburgh-Adirondacks. It's a 14x18 inch piece, a soft blue-green lakeside scene, in a slightly dented gold-leaf frame. The painting is signed in the lower-right corner 'A. Rivera 2023' and there's a tiny pencil compass drawing on the back, plus a faint coffee ring near the bottom edge. A local gallery tag is taped to the back, suggesting it was part of a recent show. I’d be glad to reunite it with its owner—if this looks like yours, message me and we’ll sort a pickup.

Black JBL Flip 5 speaker found

Found a black JBL Flip 5 Bluetooth speaker this afternoon around 3:45pm in the parking lot behind the Champlain Centre mall on Woodruff Street, Plattsburgh. It's roughly the size of a soda can, cylindrical, with a rugged fabric cover and a small dent along the top edge. A red JBL badge sits on the front, and a blue fabric strap is attached to the carry handle. There's a small sticker on the bottom with the initials 'A.R.' and a blue micro-USB cable tucked underneath. If this is yours, tell me the initials on the sticker and the model name and I’ll verify before we arrange a return.

I found a light gray knit infinity scarf this afternoon around 3:15 pm outside the Champlain Centre Mall entrance on Market Street, Plattsburgh-Adirondacks. It's a soft wool blend, about 60 inches around with a bright pink tassel that sticks out. There's a tiny white snowflake embroidery near the fringe, and a small tag inside that says 'Mira'.
