Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Oregon Coast? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Oregon Coast; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Oregon Coast with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Found train near Newport Bayfront

On Saturday at 9:05 pm, I was strolling along the Newport Bayfront when I spotted a small wooden model train tucked behind a bench near the promenade. It looks well-loved, with a couple of chipped spots in the paint and a faded sticker on the tender. I imagine a kid or hobbyist brought it here and forgot it, and the thought gave me a little ache. I’ve kept it safe for now and posted this listing in the hope it finds its way home.

Teak mid-century coffee table with drawers

Found a teak mid-century coffee table this afternoon around 2:45 pm along the Seaside Promenade near the Carousel Mall in Seaside, Oregon. It's roughly 48 inches long, 20 inches wide, with a warm honey finish and four tapered Danish legs. The table has two small drawers with brass handles and a couple of light surface scratches plus a tiny edge chip on the front right corner. Underneath there's a faded sticker reading 'Harbor House' and a small heart doodle I spotted on the underside. If someone recognizes it, I’d love to help reunite it with its owner.

Found sunburst acoustic guitar near Seaside Promenade

I found a sunburst acoustic guitar this afternoon around 2:15pm in the parking lot behind Mo's Seafood & Chowder on the Seaside Promenade. It's a Fender acoustic, full-size dreadnought, with a few light scratches on the back and a small dent near the lower bout. The headstock has a tiny lighthouse sticker, and the blue strap is covered in white anchors—nice identifying details. It was inside a black soft gig bag whose zipper sticks a bit, sitting on the ground near a row of bike racks. I hope the owner sees this and can claim it soon.

Light gray tote bag with red strap

I found a light gray tote bag this afternoon around 2:50pm behind Mo's Seafood & Chowder on the Newport Bayfront. It's a medium canvas bag, about 14 by 12 inches, with a bright red strap and a blue striped lining visible at the top. There's a small coffee stain on the bottom corner and a faded enamel star pin on the inside pocket—easy to spot. If you're the owner, DM me here and we can arrange a pickup on the promenade; I'd really like to see it back with you.

Silver ring with blue gem and wave engraving

I found a silver ring this afternoon around 3:15 pm along the Seaside Promenade by the Seaside Aquarium on Broadway in Seaside, Oregon. The band is about a size 7, sterling silver with a small blue gemstone set in a wave-pattern bezel. It’s a little salty from the ocean breeze and has a tiny nick along the outer edge, but otherwise in decent shape. I picked it up and kept it in a small pouch, hoping to help reunite it with its owner since it clearly meant something to someone.

Blue Nike swim shorts with orange fish logo

I found a pair of blue Nike swim shorts on the Seaside Promenade this afternoon around 4:15pm. They're size L, quick-dry fabric, navy with an orange fish embroidered on the left leg and the drawstring is neon green. There’s a pink silicone keychain clipped to the belt loop and a small faded label inside that might say 'Nike Swim L'. I grabbed them near the Carousel Mall entrance behind the Seaside Aquarium, by the benches overlooking the pier on the Oregon Coast. I know someone might be missing these and I’d be happy to reunite them with their owner.
