Lost pet — how to find them fast

A fast, practical plan for finding a lost pet, plus the shelters and microchip registries to contact.

When a pet goes missing in Orange County, speed and visibility are everything. Most lost pets are found close to home within the first day.

  1. Search the immediate area. Check nearby gardens, sheds, and quiet spots. Bring treats and a familiar item, and call calmly.
  2. Alert the microchip registry. Flag your pet as missing with the microchip database so your details are current if they're scanned.
  3. Call local shelters and vets. Phone shelters, pounds, and veterinary practices around Orange County and ask them to note your pet's description.
  4. Post online and on lost-pet databases. Share clear photos in local community groups and lost-pet services.
  5. Put up visible notices. A simple poster with a photo, the area, and a contact number still works.
  6. Post a listing. Add a lost-pet listing for Orange County so found-pet reports nearby surface alongside yours.

Yellow cockatiel with orange cheeks missing near Irvine Spectrum

I lost my bright yellow cockatiel, Pico, yesterday around 3pm. He has gray wings and a vivid orange patch on each cheek, and his crest sticks up when he's excited. A tiny blue thread is tied around his left leg like a makeshift anklet, and there's a small white feather snag on his right wing from a molt. I last saw him perched on a palm tree near the Starbucks at the Irvine Spectrum Center, at the corner of Irvine Center Drive and Alton Parkway, in Orange County. This bird means a lot to me—he's been a bright, cheerful presence in our home for years, and I'm really hoping to get him back soon.

Blue-and-yellow budgie with orange leg band

Hey, I lost my blue-and-yellow budgie yesterday around 3pm near the Starbucks on Main Street in Huntington Beach. Sky is a tiny parakeet, about 5 inches long, with a bright blue body, yellow head, white cheeks, and faint black wing bars. He wears an orange leg band on his right leg with the code A12. He’s very tame and loves chirping when I call his name. This bird means a lot to my family—it's sentimental and my daughter adores him. If anyone finds him, reach out here; we'd really appreciate getting him back.

Beagle mix with blue collar, brown/white

I lost my beagle mix yesterday around 3pm. He’s medium-sized, about 25 pounds, brown and white with a light blue collar and a tiny silver tag. He has a crescent-shaped scar on his right hind leg and one blue eye with the other brown, which helps me tell him apart. I last saw him near the South Coast Plaza parking structure outside Nordstrom in Costa Mesa, Orange County, and he tends to wander toward the nearby Trader Joe’s. He’s really friendly and good with kids, but he gets anxious around strangers. He’s my rescue buddy from last year, and it would mean the world to get him back safe. If you spotted him, you can DM me here or email me at [email protected].

Lost green parakeet named Kiwi with yellow beak and white tail feathers near the park in Orange County.

I lost my green parakeet named Kiwi on Tuesday while I was at the park in Orange County. She was sitting on my shoulder and flew away when a dog approached. She's very friendly and has a yellow beak with a few white feathers near her tail. I'm really worried and miss her a lot.
