Lost pet — how to find them fast

A fast, practical plan for finding a lost pet, plus the shelters and microchip registries to contact.

When a pet goes missing in Oneonta, speed and visibility are everything. Most lost pets are found close to home within the first day.

  1. Search the immediate area. Check nearby gardens, sheds, and quiet spots. Bring treats and a familiar item, and call calmly.
  2. Alert the microchip registry. Flag your pet as missing with the microchip database so your details are current if they're scanned.
  3. Call local shelters and vets. Phone shelters, pounds, and veterinary practices around Oneonta and ask them to note your pet's description.
  4. Post online and on lost-pet databases. Share clear photos in local community groups and lost-pet services.
  5. Put up visible notices. A simple poster with a photo, the area, and a contact number still works.
  6. Post a listing. Add a lost-pet listing for Oneonta so found-pet reports nearby surface alongside yours.

Leopard gecko, bright green with white belly, lost

I lost my bright green leopard gecko yesterday around 3pm. It's about 4 inches long, with a white belly and a few tiny yellow speckles along the back, plus a small notch in the tail. It lives in a clear Exo Terra terrarium with a blue lid; I was moving it around near the Oneonta Public Library on Main Street when it probably slipped out. Last seen around the library crosswalk on Main Street, Oneonta. This little guy is shy and has sentimental value—I've had him for years and really need him back.

Leopard gecko with orange-tan speckles

I lost my leopard gecko yesterday around 3pm. It's about 7 inches from head to tail, orange-tan with dark speckles and a chunky tail. It's in good condition and eats regularly when I feed it crickets. I last saw it outside the Oneonta Public Library on Main Street, near the bench by the bus stop and the flower beds in front of the building. It has sentimental value to me—my sister gave it to me as a gift last year—and I'm really hoping to get it back safe. There's a tiny pale crescent-shaped scar behind its left eye and a slight kink at the end of its tail that a keeper would recognize. If you found it, please reach out.

Lost dog: small beagle mix, tan and white

I lost my beagle mix, Rio, yesterday around 3pm. He's a small-to-medium dog, about 25 pounds, with tan and white fur and a distinctive black patch over his right eye. He’s wearing a red nylon collar with a round silver tag that says Rio, and he has a small white heart-shaped patch on his chest along with a tiny notch in his right ear. I was at the Oneonta Public Library on Main Street when he darted after a jogger's dog and disappeared toward Neahwa Park; I’ve been panicked since then because he’s timid but super loving and really important to me, like a family member. If you’ve seen him, please email me at [email protected] or text me—no questions asked, I just want him home.

Gray and white hamster with blue harness

I lost my gray-and-white hamster yesterday around 3pm near the Oneonta Public Library on Main Street. She's the size of a walnut, with soft fur, a pink nose, olive-green eyes, and she wears a tiny sky-blue harness with a small silver bell. There's a faint crescent-shaped scar on her right shoulder from a past fall. This little guy is my daughter's pet and means a lot to us; I really need to get him back safe—he has sentimental value.
