Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Nottingham? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Nottingham; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Nottingham with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Found mid-century oak coffee table with leaf motif

Found a mid-century oak coffee table this afternoon around 3:15 pm in the courtyard behind the Victoria Centre, near the Wheeler Gate entrance in Nottingham. It's a warm oak finish, about 120 cm long, 50 cm wide, and 45 cm tall, with a few surface scratches and a small water ring on the top. The apron has a carved leaf motif and there's a faded 'Handmade in Nottingham' sticker on the underside. It's sturdy and a bit dusty from being outdoors. If this is your table, I'm hoping to get it back to its rightful owner—message me here and we can arrange a pickup near the Broad Street tram stop.

Leopard gecko found near Nottingham Station

I found a small leopard gecko this afternoon around 4:15pm under a bench outside Nottingham Station on Station Street. It was perched on a cracked, clear plastic terrarium that someone must have abandoned, with a tiny heat mat still warm underneath. The gecko is about 4 inches long, tan with bold black spots and a bright orange tail. I spotted a small white scar on its left shoulder, which is pretty distinctive. It looked healthy, a little spooked, but otherwise in good shape. It obviously belongs to someone who cares for reptiles, and I’d love to help reunite them with their pet if possible.

Found navy North Face parka near Old Market Square

I found a navy North Face parka this afternoon around 2:15pm outside the tram stop by Old Market Square in Nottingham city centre. It's a men's size L, in good condition with a detachable faux-fur hood and a bright red zipper pull that makes it easy to spot. There's a tiny compass patch on the left sleeve and an inside care tag with the initials 'P.P.' I figured someone might be missing it after a busy day in town, and I’d love to help get it back to its owner. If this sounds like yours, drop me a message here and we can arrange a safe return.

Black tote bag with pink lining

I found a black canvas tote bag this afternoon around 2:30 pm near the Market Street entrance to Old Market Square in Nottingham. It’s a medium-sized tote, a bit worn but usable, with a bright pink lining that shows when you unzip it. There’s a small white tag on the outer corner with the name 'Mia' written in cursive. Inside I spotted a spiral notebook with a floral cover, a compact umbrella, and a set of keys on a pink keyring. The bag seems to be in decent condition and I’d really like to help the owner get it back if this is theirs.

I found a green paperback travel guide this afternoon around 2:45pm outside the tram stop on Market Street in Nottingham. It's about A5, 240 pages, with a creased spine and a dog-eared corner on the Nottingham walking tours section. Inside there's a blue ribbon bookmark and a faded sticker from 'Explore UK,' plus a pencil note that says 'L.P., Feb 2024.' White wireless earbuds charging case, blue sticker

Found a white wireless earbuds charging case this morning around 9:15am near the Nottingham Station forecourt, by the tram stop. It’s a standard white case, a bit scuffed with a small dent on the top-right corner. There’s a blue sticker on the back that reads 'Lucky 7', and inside the lid you can see two black silicone ear tips. The case looks recently used but clean, and there’s no sign of the actual earbuds inside. I’m hoping to reunite it with its owner, so if this is yours, I’d be glad to return it—just tell me the sticker and the dent details.
