Lost your phone? Step-by-step recovery

Carrier contacts, Find My / Find My Device, and the local steps to recover or secure a lost phone.

Losing your phone in Northern WI is stressful, but acting quickly improves your odds of getting it back and limits the damage if it's gone for good. Work through these steps in order.

  1. Locate it remotely. Use Find My (iPhone) or Find My Device (Android) from another phone or computer to see the phone on a map, play a sound, and mark it as lost. Lost Mode locks the device and shows a contact message on the screen.
  2. Lock and message it. If it's nearby, the sound may be enough. If it isn't, enable Lost Mode and add a phone number where you can be reached.
  3. Call your carrier. Report the phone lost so they can suspend service and block the IMEI. This stops anyone running up charges and flags the handset across networks.
  4. Change key passwords. Update your email, banking, and social passwords, especially if the phone wasn't locked. Sign the device out of those accounts where you can.
  5. Report it locally. File a report with the police non-emergency line for Northern WI — a crime reference number is often required for insurance claims.
  6. Post a listing. Add a lost-phone listing for Northern WI so anyone who finds it can reach you privately.

Keep checking the map periodically — a phone that's off may reappear when it's charged.

Lost memory cards in Northern WI

On Saturday night around 9:30 p.m., I realized my memory cards were missing after I left a coffee shop on Broadway Street in downtown Superior. They’re a small hard-shell case containing several SD cards; some hold photos from a recent hiking trip in Nicolet National Forest. I spent hours retracing my steps along the lakefront, hoping someone honest picked them up. If you found them, please keep them safe; I’ll be back on the canal trail and the lakefront around sunrise to search again.

Black Sony earbuds with blue charging case

I lost my black Sony WF-1000XM4 wireless earbuds yesterday around 3pm near the public library on Tower Ave in Superior, WI. They came in a blue charging case, and the right earbud has a tiny dent along the edge while the lid of the case has a small chip from a fall last winter. It's a compact setup I wear every day for calls and music, and this particular pair was a gift from my sister last Christmas, so they have a lot of sentimental value. Email me at [email protected] so we can figure out the best way to return them.
