Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Northern Panhandle? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Northern Panhandle; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Northern Panhandle with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Found equipment for various sports in Northern Panhandle

Hi, I am Jordan Hayes. I found a green duffel bag containing equipment for various sports around 5:30 p.m. Friday behind the Wheeling Park parking lot on 12th Street, close to the Ohio River waterfront. The bag has a pennant and a water bottle with a Panthers logo, along with soccer cleats, baseball gloves, and tennis rackets. It looks like someone hurried away from a game, and I would like the owner to know I picked it up. I am hoping this helps reunite it with its team.

FOUND: Coins on Main Street near Weirton Plaza.

I found a handful of coins on Main Street near the Weirton Plaza in the Northern Panhandle, West Virginia, United States around 11:30 AM on Monday. The coins include pennies, nickels, and a few older quarters, all jumbled together as if someone was counting change for a quick errand. It felt simple yet meaningful—money can carry a lot of memories and plans. I tucked them into a small bag and posted here so the owner can reclaim them through the site.

Found travel visas near Centre Market, Wheeling

I found the travel visas this morning near Centre Market in Wheeling, in the Northern Panhandle, around 8:15 a.m. on Tuesday. A tan leather folder sat on a bench outside the Market, the kind that holds more than a few papers. Inside were travel visas and an itinerary with a name I couldn't read clearly. It felt urgent and heavy to think someone might be stranded abroad without them, so I’m posting this here in the hopes the owner recognizes them. I’m hoping they’re returned to the rightful person soon.

Keys with blue paw print keychain

Found a set of keys this morning around 7:50am in the parking lot behind Riverside Market on Main Street in the Northern Panhandle. They’re on a bright blue silicone paw-print keychain, with four standard house keys and a slim black car-key fob. There’s also a small brass tag engraved 'LB' that’s a little worn. They look a bit weathered from the rain but are otherwise in good shape. I’m hoping to get them back to their owner because they feel important and there’s sentimental value in the memories these keys unlock. If you’re missing them, DM me with the brass tag initials and a description of one of the keys to verify ownership.

Red North Face kids' winter jacket, size M

I found a red North Face kids' winter jacket this afternoon around 2:15pm in the parking lot behind the Public Library on Market Street in Wheeling. It's a youth size M, bright red with a black zipper and a neon orange lining that makes it easy to spot in snow. The jacket is in great condition, just a light rinse of road salt and a little snow on the hood. Inside the left pocket, there's a small blue clip and a label that reads 'Alex'—hopefully that helps the owner recognize it and get it back.

Navy Nike hoodie with fox patch

I found a navy zip-up Nike hoodie this morning around 9:15am in the parking lot behind the Northern Panhandle Public Library on Main Street. It’s a men's size Large, solid navy with white drawstrings, and there’s a small fox-shaped patch stitched on the left chest. The fabric is a bit faded and there’s a tiny coffee stain near the hem, but otherwise it’s in decent shape and the zipper works fine. Inside there’s a Nike Dri-FIT tag, and the zipper pull has a tiny dent. I’m hoping to get it back to its rightful owner—if this sounds like yours, drop me a line here and we can figure out a pickup near the library.
