Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in North Mississippi? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for North Mississippi; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for North Mississippi with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Milwaukee M12 drill kit found near Walmart

I found a Milwaukee M12 cordless drill kit this afternoon around 3:15pm behind the Walmart on West Main Street in Tupelo, North Mississippi. It's in a red-and-black hard case, with two 12V batteries and a charger tucked inside, plus a small bit set. The case has a dent on the bottom-left corner and a green painter's tape label with 'PP' on the top. I left it by the bike rack near the store entrance, hoping to reunite it with the owner. If you recognize this, tell me the serial number on the battery label or describe the bit set you usually use, and we can arrange a pickup.

Blue hardcover The Great Gatsby with yellow bookmark

I found a blue hardcover edition of The Great Gatsby this afternoon around 4:15pm outside Square Books on the Oxford Square in downtown Oxford, North Mississippi. It's a Penguin Classics edition, blue cloth cover with gold lettering on the spine, and a bright yellow bookmark sticking out between pages. There's a faint coffee ring on the front cover and a small crease on the bottom corner. Inside, there's a sticky note with the name 'Alex' and a phone number tucked between pages 88 and 89, which should be a good clue for the owner. If this is your book, I'm happy to get it back to you.

Black rectangular glasses with silver bridge

I found a pair of black rectangular glasses this afternoon around 2:15pm, tucked behind the bench near The Lyric on the Oxford Square in downtown Oxford, North Mississippi. They're black plastic frames with a slim silver bridge and medium-sized lenses; the left lens has a faint scratch. The case is a worn brown leather sleeve with 'KM' embossed on the flap. I figured they probably belong to someone who needs them daily and I'd love to get them back.

Two-tone Samsonite suitcase with blue TSA lock

I found a two-tone black-and-red Samsonite 28-inch hard-shell suitcase this afternoon around 2:15pm in the parking lot behind the Walmart Supercenter on Getwell Road in Southaven, MS. It’s dented a bit on the top-left corner and has a blue TSA lock and a bright lime-green luggage tag with the initials J.K. Inside it looks mostly empty, just a folded garment bag and some packing straps. The wheels roll nicely and the overall condition is fair. If this belongs to you or if you know the owner, please reach out—I'd love to get it back to them.

I found a blue Penguin Classics paperback of Pride and Prejudice this afternoon around 1:45pm outside a bookstore on Main Street in downtown Tupelo. It's a well-worn 5 x 8 inch paperback with sun-faded blue cover and a gold-foil title. Found a box of rare vintage baseball cards from the 1950s and 1960s in North Mississippi attic.

I found a box containing a set of rare vintage baseball cards while cleaning out my attic in North Mississippi. There are cards from the 1950s and 1960s, including some Hall of Famers. They seem to be in pretty good condition but some might need a little cleaning. I would love to find the original owner, as I know how valuable these can be!
