Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Newcastle? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Newcastle; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Newcastle with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Found: Action Figures in Newcastle

I was wandering along the Newcastle Quayside on Saturday, about 4:15 pm, when I spotted a small bundle of action figures tucked behind a planter by the Millennium Bridge. They looked well-loved, with a few scrapes and one sword missing from a green knight. I figured someone must be missing them, and I tucked them into my bag to keep them safe from the wind and busy feet. I’ll hold onto them here at the local community center until the rightful owner lists them on the site.

Found a Driver's License near Newcastle Central Station.

I was strolling through Grainger Market and out onto Market Street around 08:45 this morning when I spotted a Driver's License lying on the pavement near the bus concourse outside Newcastle Central Station. The photo showed a young man; the card carried the name clearly. It felt heavy with responsibility and I knew it belonged to someone who would want it back. I turned it in at the station's security desk so it could be processed back to its owner through the proper channels.

Found: Hats near Newcastle Quayside.

I found a set of hats on a bench outside the Grainger Market in Newcastle on Friday at about 5:45 p.m. The pile included a beige tweed flat cap, a black knitted beanie, and a bright blue bobble hat with a small charity logo. I checked around, but there was no one in sight looking for them, and there was no note attached. They looked recently worn, and the cold breeze made the hats flop around as I picked them up. I’m posting here in the hope the owner sees it and knows their hats are safe until they’re claimed.

found two microwaves near Newcastle Central Station.

Yesterday around 6:30 pm I found two microwaves abandoned by the bus stop outside Fenwick's on Northumberland Street, Newcastle upon Tyne. They were in a large cardboard box, cords trailing, as if someone had just moved them. I carried them to a sheltered nook by the station entrance and thought someone might be missing them after a move or a sale. If these belong to you, please contact through the site.

Blue neon Nike running jacket found in Newcastle

I found a blue neon running jacket this afternoon around 3:15pm outside the Fenwick department store on Northumberland Street, Newcastle. It's a Nike men's size M windbreaker, electric blue with a lime-green zipper pull, a white Nike swoosh on the chest, and two zip pockets. The cuffs are black and there's a small snag along the hem, but it's otherwise in good wearable condition. I grabbed it near the bus stop by Eldon Square, hoping to reunite it with its owner.

Blue notebook with contact list and red elastic

Found a small blue notebook near Central Arcade on Northumberland Street this afternoon around 4pm. It's about A6 size, blue cover, with a red elastic strap and a tiny coffee cup sticker on the inside front cover. Inside there’s a handwritten list of names and phone numbers, with a pink sticky note that reads 'Emily' and some initials embossed on the corner ('A.B.'). If this is yours, message me here and we can arrange a pickup near Central Station in Newcastle; I’d love to get it back so the owner isn’t left worrying about missing contacts.
