Lost pet — how to find them fast

A fast, practical plan for finding a lost pet, plus the shelters and microchip registries to contact.

When a pet goes missing in New York City, speed and visibility are everything. Most lost pets are found close to home within the first day.

  1. Search the immediate area. Check nearby gardens, sheds, and quiet spots. Bring treats and a familiar item, and call calmly.
  2. Alert the microchip registry. Flag your pet as missing with the microchip database so your details are current if they're scanned.
  3. Call local shelters and vets. Phone shelters, pounds, and veterinary practices around New York City and ask them to note your pet's description.
  4. Post online and on lost-pet databases. Share clear photos in local community groups and lost-pet services.
  5. Put up visible notices. A simple poster with a photo, the area, and a contact number still works.
  6. Post a listing. Add a lost-pet listing for New York City so found-pet reports nearby surface alongside yours.

Lost blue parakeet with yellow chest near Grand Central

I lost my blue parakeet, Pico, yesterday around 3pm after he hopped onto my shoulder as I left the subway at Grand Central. He's about the size of a palm, with bright blue feathers and a small yellow chest, plus a distinctive white patch on his left wing. I last saw him perched on a cafe awning near Grand Central Terminal on 42nd Street, then he darted toward the trees by Bryant Park. He responds to the name Pico and calms when I whistle, so I'm really hoping someone who finds him can call or message me. This little guy is my daily bright spot and he means a lot to me. If you've seen him, please reach out--I'll drive over with his favorite millet spray.

Cream-colored dwarf hamster in pink cage

I lost my cream-colored dwarf hamster yesterday around 3pm near Union Square, by the 14th Street subway entrance. It lived in a small pink plastic cage with a clear front and a tiny blue water bottle attached to the side; the cage has a little blue heart sticker on the front and sits on a tote bag. The hamster is about the size of a ping-pong ball, with a warm cream coat and a faint apricot patch on its back, plus a small white freckle on its left ear that shows in certain light. I adopted her from a shelter last spring, so she’s got a lot of sentimental value to me, and I’m really worried. If anyone found her, please reach out—I’m happy to meet in Midtown or at Union Square to grab her back.

Lost small green tree frog last seen near the conservatory bushes in Central Park.

I lost my pet green tree frog while visiting Central Park yesterday. I was taking him out for some time in the sun, and he hopped off into the bushes near the conservatory. He's quite small and might blend in well with the environment, but I'm really hoping someone can help me find him.
