Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Milwaukee? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Milwaukee; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Milwaukee with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Found sheet music near Milwaukee Public Market

I was tidying a corner outside Colectivo Coffee at 6:15 p.m. on a Tuesday when I spotted a crumpled bundle of sheet music wedged under a bench by the Milwaukee Riverwalk. The pages rustled in the breeze, a coffee ring darkening the top sheet, and someone’s tempo marks penciled in the margins. It felt like a tiny voice asking to be returned to its owner. I slid the sheets into a folder and stood watch for a moment, hoping the owner would recognize it. I’ll keep it here safe until it’s claimed.

Blue hardcover travel guide found near Milwaukee Public Market

I found a blue hardcover Milwaukee travel guide this afternoon around 2:45pm, left on the curb just outside the Milwaukee Public Market on Water Street. The cover is a sturdy navy blue with gold lettering, and the spine is noticeably creased from travel. Inside the front cover there's a small sticky note that reads 'Alex 1127', plus a folded Riverwalk map tucked in the back pocket. It looks well-loved but the pages are clean, with a faint coffee stain along the bottom edge. It clearly belongs to someone who uses it—a bit sentimental, I can tell. If this is yours or you know who it belongs to, I can help reunite you.

Found black North Face parka near Riverwalk

I found a black North Face parka this afternoon around 2:15pm outside the Milwaukee Public Market along the Riverwalk near 400 N Broadway. It's a men's medium, puffy with a detachable faux-fur hood and bright red zipper pulls. The left sleeve has a small embroidered fox patch and there's a light scuff on the right cuff from winter wear. Inside the pocket lies a blue bus-ticket stub with the initials 'MB' on the tag—an odd but helpful clue. I’d really love to get it back to its owner; Milwaukee winters are rough, and this coat clearly means a lot to someone.

Cream retriever mix found near Milwaukee Public Market

I found a dog this afternoon around 3:15pm near the Milwaukee Public Market on Water Street. He's a medium-sized, cream-colored retriever mix with a blue nylon harness and a red collar. He has a white patch on his chest, and his left ear flops a little compared to the right. There's a bone-shaped tag that reads 'Milo' along with a phone number, though I haven't been able to reach the owner yet. He seems friendly but a bit anxious after being on the street, and I know how nerve-wracking it is to lose a pet in a big city—really hoping the owner sees this and can reunite with him soon.

Silver Timex Ironman watch with black strap

Found a silver Timex Ironman watch this afternoon around 3:15 pm near the Milwaukee Public Market on Water Street. It has a black resin strap and a digital display with white numerals, plus an Indiglo backlight button that still works. There's a small scratch on the bezel and a faint scuff on the glass from being on the ground by the bike racks outside the market entrance. I picked it up from the gravel near the bike racks and kept it safe in my bag, in case its owner is looking for it. If this belongs to you, we can meet in a public spot downtown to swap it back; I really hope its owner gets it back soon.

Found Yamaha FG800 acoustic guitar

I found a Yamaha FG800 acoustic guitar this afternoon around 3:15pm, tucked in a black soft gig bag behind the Milwaukee Public Market on Water Street, near the riverfront. The guitar is a natural finish dreadnought, with a few light scratches on the lower bout and a small dent on the headstock, but otherwise in good condition. There’s a bright blue strap peeking out from the case and a sticker of a Milwaukee Brewers logo on the inside of the lid, which helped me spot it again. I know someone must be missing this, and I’d love to get it back to its owner. If this sounds like yours, reply here and we’ll coordinate a meetup near the market or Cathedral Square.
