Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Leeds? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Leeds; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Leeds with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

FOUND: Equipment for Various Sports near Leeds Station

I was walking home from the gym around 7:15 pm last Monday when I spotted a lime-green holdall wedged behind the Leeds Station entrance by the coffee kiosk. The bag bulged with equipment for various sports: a football boot, a rugby shirt, a rolled-up yoga mat, and a couple of tennis balls. It looked recently forgotten, damp from the drizzle and with a faint chalky smell. I checked the pockets for a name tag or anything obvious, but there was nothing I could use. I’m posting this in case someone has been worrying about it—hope it finds its way back to its owner.

Found: Travel visas found in Leeds.

I found someone else’s travel visas on the platform at Leeds City Station around 9:10 a.m. today. They were in a slim leather sleeve, tucked inside a travel-document folder, with a few visa stamps visible through the clear window. It must have been a frantic moment for the owner, and I didn’t want to leave them on the ground, so I handed them to the station’s lost property and kept them safe in case someone comes asking. If you’re reading this, I’m hopeful you’ll understand I’m doing the right thing and that you’ll contact through the site to arrange a proper handover.

Blue SanDisk 16GB USB drive with fox sticker

I found a USB flash drive this afternoon around 3:10pm on Briggate, just outside Primark in Leeds city centre. It’s a SanDisk Cruzer 16GB, blue plastic body with a black cap, a couple of scratches and a small white sticker with a cartoon fox on the label. I didn’t open it beyond confirming it’s a personal drive, but it looks like it holds personal stuff. I’d really like to get it back to whoever lost it — if this is yours, drop me a message and we can arrange a pickup near Briggate.

Leeds gig ticket stub, neon yellow with barcode

Found a printed concert ticket this afternoon around 2:15pm outside the O2 Academy Leeds on Cookridge Street. It's an A6 paper ticket, neon yellow with a purple border, and the big barcode at the bottom is still clear. The event name is partially legible—looks like 'Live Nights'—and the date printed is 'Fri 12 Jul'. There's a small blue sticker with the initials 'MF' stuck to the corner, and the paper is lightly creased from being in my jacket pocket. I know tickets like this can have sentimental value or be a gift, so I’d really like to get it back to the rightful owner. If you recognize it, message me and we can arrange a safe handoff.

Found red metronome with black case near Leeds Market

I found a red metronome with a black carrying case this morning around 11:15am, tucked near the Leeds Market entrance on Kirkgate. It's a compact plastic metronome with a glossy finish, and I can see a small dent on the lower edge and a white sticker on the back with the initials EM. It still ticks and keeps time, so it seems to be in working order. I left it on a bench for a few minutes while I grabbed a coffee, and a few passersby looked relieved when I picked it up, so I think it belongs to a fellow musician. If this is yours, please get in touch with a description of those initials and where you normally keep it. We'll meet up near the market to hand it over.

Silver clip-on guitar tuner found

Found a small silver clip-on guitar tuner in the Miscellaneous Musical Items category. I found it this afternoon around 3:45pm outside Kirkgate Market on Kirkgate, Leeds. It's about 2 inches long, with a black rubber grip on the clip and a red backlit LCD display that still glows when powered. There are a couple of tiny scratches on the metal clip and a handwritten sticker on the bottom that says 'ALEX' in blue Sharpie. It looks like a generic model, but it works fine. If this belongs to you, I’d love to help get it back—it’s a tiny thing, but important to a player.
