Lost pet — how to find them fast

A fast, practical plan for finding a lost pet, plus the shelters and microchip registries to contact.

When a pet goes missing in Kansas City, speed and visibility are everything. Most lost pets are found close to home within the first day.

  1. Search the immediate area. Check nearby gardens, sheds, and quiet spots. Bring treats and a familiar item, and call calmly.
  2. Alert the microchip registry. Flag your pet as missing with the microchip database so your details are current if they're scanned.
  3. Call local shelters and vets. Phone shelters, pounds, and veterinary practices around Kansas City and ask them to note your pet's description.
  4. Post online and on lost-pet databases. Share clear photos in local community groups and lost-pet services.
  5. Put up visible notices. A simple poster with a photo, the area, and a contact number still works.
  6. Post a listing. Add a lost-pet listing for Kansas City so found-pet reports nearby surface alongside yours.

Dwarf hamster with white patch, blue cage

I lost my dwarf hamster yesterday around 3pm. He's a small, grey-brown guy with a distinct white patch on his forehead and a tiny black dot on his left paw. He was in a light-blue plastic cage with a yellow exercise wheel, and I think he squeezed out when I was unloading groceries at the City Market, near the Main Street entrance and the KC Streetcar stop at 4th & Main. He's the size of a tennis ball and zooms around whenever he gets excited; his fur is silky and soft. This little guy means the world to me—he's been a comfort through a tough month, and I’d be incredibly grateful to get him back.

Emerald-green budgie with yellow head

I lost my emerald-green budgie with a sunny yellow head yesterday around 3pm. It slipped from its cage while I was waiting for the downtown streetcar near Union Station, outside the entrance on West 18th Street. The bird is about 6 inches long with a bright blue tail and a slightly frayed left-wing feather. It wears a silver leg band with 'KC' etched on it. This little guy is really precious to me—I've had him since last year and he’s a big part of my day. If anyone finds him, please reach out; I’d be forever grateful.

Golden retriever with blue collar near Crown Center

Yesterday around 3pm we were by the Crown Center fountain on Grand Blvd in Kansas City when he bolted after a squirrel and disappeared. He's a medium-sized golden retriever, about 60 pounds, with a bright blue nylon collar and a small stainless steel tag. He has a white patch on his chest and a tiny scar behind his left ear. He answers to Nova and is usually friendly, but may be shy with strangers; this dog has been with us for eight years and means the world to my family. If you spot him, text me or email me so we can arrange a meetup.

Blue reflective dog harness with paw charm

I lost my blue reflective dog harness this afternoon around 3:45pm near the Union Station entrance on 30th Street in Kansas City. It's a medium Ruffwear Front Range harness with neon lime stitching and reflective stripes along the edges. There's a small paw-print charm on the left strap and a tiny dent on the metal D-ring where the ID tag used to hang. It also has a faded 'Penny' ID tag on the back. The harness was a gift from my sister last year, and Penny looks so uncomfortable without it; I really need it back.
