Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Kalamazoo? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Kalamazoo; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Kalamazoo with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Found DVDs in Kalamazoo, Michigan

I was walking my dog near Bronson Park in Kalamazoo around 9:15 PM on Saturday when I spotted a blue tote with a jumble of DVDs spilled near the bench. I picked up the tote, skimmed a few titles, and tucked it away in my apartment to keep everything safe. They clearly belong to someone else, perhaps a neighbor who loves film; I’m posting here to help reunite them with the rightful owner. If these are yours, the site's messaging system will let you reach me.

Gold ring with emerald near Bronson Park

Found a ring this afternoon around 3:15pm, lying on the sidewalk near the Bronson Park fountain in downtown Kalamazoo. It's a 14k yellow gold band, about 6-7mm wide, with a small oval emerald set on top. The inside of the band has a faint engraving 'KM' and there's a tiny scratch along the outer edge from a scrape in the grass. The ring is in good shape overall, and I’d really like to help reunite it with its owner—if you know this ring, tell me what the engraving says or describe the setting and I’ll get it back to you.

Black leather briefcase with brass initials J.T.

I found a black leather briefcase this afternoon around 2:30pm in the parking lot behind the Kalamazoo Public Library on West Michigan Avenue, near Bronson Park. It's a standard-size case, a bit scuffed on the bottom edge but otherwise in good condition. The outside features a brass plate with the initials 'J.T.' and a small zipper pocket that still zips smoothly. Inside, there's a red satin lining, a USB-C charger, and a few business cards. If someone recognizes this, drop a note here and we can meet somewhere safe in Kalamazoo to get it back.

Le Creuset cobalt blue Dutch oven with lid

I found a Le Creuset 3.5-quart cobalt blue cast-iron Dutch oven with lid this afternoon around 2:45pm behind the Kalamazoo Public Library on Rose Street. It’s in great condition, glossy enamel all over, with no chips except a tiny wear mark on the outer rim. Inside the lid ring, someone etched the initials 'M.K.', which seems like a good identifier if you’re the owner. It’s a hefty piece—the kind you’d recognize right away if you own it—and I’d love to return it to the rightful owner. I can meet up near the library or at a nearby coffee shop to hand it off.

Found gray tabby cat with blue collar near Bronson Park

I found a gray tabby cat with a white chest this afternoon around 2:45pm near Bronson Park on West Michigan Ave in Kalamazoo. It wears a bright blue collar with a small silver bell, and I can see a tiny notch in its left ear—a definite ID feature. The cat is curious but a bit skittish at first, and it warmed up after I spoke softly. If this is your cat, I’d love to help get it back home and reunite you two.
