Lost pet — how to find them fast

A fast, practical plan for finding a lost pet, plus the shelters and microchip registries to contact.

When a pet goes missing in Indianapolis, speed and visibility are everything. Most lost pets are found close to home within the first day.

  1. Search the immediate area. Check nearby gardens, sheds, and quiet spots. Bring treats and a familiar item, and call calmly.
  2. Alert the microchip registry. Flag your pet as missing with the microchip database so your details are current if they're scanned.
  3. Call local shelters and vets. Phone shelters, pounds, and veterinary practices around Indianapolis and ask them to note your pet's description.
  4. Post online and on lost-pet databases. Share clear photos in local community groups and lost-pet services.
  5. Put up visible notices. A simple poster with a photo, the area, and a contact number still works.
  6. Post a listing. Add a lost-pet listing for Indianapolis so found-pet reports nearby surface alongside yours.

Beagle mix, brown/white, lost near Monument Circle

I lost my beagle mix around 3pm yesterday near Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis. He's medium-sized, about 30 pounds, brown and white with a white blaze on his chest, and floppy ears. He wears a blue collar with a silver bone-shaped tag that says 'Milo' on the back. There's a tiny scar behind his left ear from a playful tumble last week, which should help identify him. He usually comes when I call, but the area around the circle can be loud and scary, and he's skittish. This dog has sentimental value to me and my kids—I'm really hoping to get him back safe.

Leopard gecko missing; orange with black speckles

I lost my orange leopard gecko yesterday around 3pm near the Canal Walk behind the City Market on Market Street in downtown Indianapolis. He's about 4 inches long, bright orange with black speckles, a thin white stripe along his spine, and a small nick on the tip of his tail. Geckos are skittish and like to hide under rocks, so I haven't seen him since, and I'm really worried he'll wander into a doorway or a store and get stepped on. It was a gift from my sister and has sentimental value to me; please help me get him back, if you spot him, text me here and I’ll come right away.

Fluffy apricot-white guinea pig, missing in Indianapolis

I lost my fluffy guinea pig yesterday around 3pm. He's about 9 inches long with an apricot and white coat, and he has a small brown freckle on his left ear plus a white dash on his right hind leg. I last saw him near Circle Centre Mall on Meridian Street, along the Canal Walk by the food court in downtown Indianapolis. He's a shy, gentle sweetheart, and this little guy was a gift from my sister, so it means a lot to me to get him back. If you’ve seen him, email me at [email protected] and I’ll swing by to pick him up as soon as possible; I’m really worried and just want him home.
