Found an item? Your responsibilities

What to do when you find someone else's property — your responsibilities and how to return it safely.

Found something in Huntington-Ashland? Handling it responsibly protects both you and the owner. Rules vary by location, but the principles are consistent.

  1. Make a reasonable effort to find the owner. Check for ID, contact details, or anything that identifies who it belongs to.
  2. Don't assume it's yours to keep. Keeping found property without trying to return it can have legal consequences. When in doubt, hand it in.
  3. Hand valuables to the authorities. Report significant or high-value finds to the police non-emergency line for Huntington-Ashland; they'll log it and may issue a reference.
  4. Store it safely. Keep the item secure and unchanged while you try to return it.
  5. Post a found listing. Add a found-item listing for Huntington-Ashland with enough detail for the real owner to identify it — while holding back one verifying detail.

Found toasters near Pullman Square, Huntington

Last night around 7:30 PM, I found two toasters sitting on the ground behind Pullman Square in Huntington, West Virginia. They were old, heavy-looking, one silver with black enamel and the other white with scratches. They looked like they had been there a while, perhaps dropped from someone's car or left after a block party. I picked them up and brought them to a safe place, thinking someone might be frantically searching for their kitchen gadgets. If these belong to you, I left them here for the site to connect you with. I know it's odd to find toasters, but I hope this helps someone salvage breakfast.

Found sheet music near Pullman Square

Hi, I’m Grace Harper. I found a stack of sheet music on a bench by the fountain at Pullman Square around 3:45 p.m. today, in Huntington. The pages are worn, with pencil marks and a name scrawled on the cover, clearly used for a rehearsal. It felt like saving a tiny fragment of someone’s music. I’m hoping the owner will see this and claim it through the site.

Found chargers near Pullman Square, Huntington

I'm Mia Thompson. I found a set of chargers this afternoon around 4:20 PM under a bench near Pullman Square in Huntington. One charger is black with a blue USB-C cable; another is gray with a worn label. I know how stressful it is to be away from power, so I posted this in case they belong to someone who needs them back. If these are yours, you know how to recognize them by the details.

Found Student ID near Marshall University, Huntington

Today around 1:15 p.m., I found this Student ID on the floor near the Marshall University Student Center in Pullman Square. It has a Marshall University emblem and a student photo. It seems mishandled and someone will be relieved to see it back. I can only imagine how stressed the owner must feel after misplacing something so essential.

Bracelet with green enamel clasp found near Pullman Square

I found a bracelet this afternoon around 2:15pm outside the Pullman Square fountain, near the big clock in Huntington. It's a silver-tone link bracelet, about 7 inches long, with a green enamel leaf charm and a tiny heart charm engraved with an initial on the back. The tag looks like 'Alex and Ani' and the piece shows light wear, but it's in decent condition overall. Whoever owns it, this seems like a cherished piece and I’d love to reunite it with you—drop me a message in the app and we can arrange a pickup at a nearby coffee shop.

Found: Festival tickets on blue lanyard

I found a pair of festival tickets this afternoon around 2:30pm in the parking lot behind Pullman Square in the Huntington-Ashland area. They're for the Riverside Jazz Fest and hang on a blue lanyard with a small silver backstage pass clipped to it. The tickets are for Row G, Seats 14 and 15, dated July 12, and the barcode is visible on the back. One ticket has a faint coffee stain along the corner, and the lanyard features a tiny embroidered note that reads 'RJF 23'. It would mean a lot to return them to whoever lost them; if you see this, please get in touch.
