Lost pet — how to find them fast

A fast, practical plan for finding a lost pet, plus the shelters and microchip registries to contact.

When a pet goes missing in Hampton Roads, speed and visibility are everything. Most lost pets are found close to home within the first day.

  1. Search the immediate area. Check nearby gardens, sheds, and quiet spots. Bring treats and a familiar item, and call calmly.
  2. Alert the microchip registry. Flag your pet as missing with the microchip database so your details are current if they're scanned.
  3. Call local shelters and vets. Phone shelters, pounds, and veterinary practices around Hampton Roads and ask them to note your pet's description.
  4. Post online and on lost-pet databases. Share clear photos in local community groups and lost-pet services.
  5. Put up visible notices. A simple poster with a photo, the area, and a contact number still works.
  6. Post a listing. Add a lost-pet listing for Hampton Roads so found-pet reports nearby surface alongside yours.

Purple dog collar with paw-tag and reflective stripe

I lost my purple nylon dog collar yesterday around 3pm along the Oceanfront Boardwalk in Virginia Beach, near 25th Street by the Lifeguard Station. It's a medium-width collar with a slim neon-green reflective stripe along the edge, and a tiny silver paw-print charm that dangles from the buckle. The plastic adjuster is slightly scratched and there's a small bend from a snag on a fence. This collar is tied to my rescue dog's identity—it’s the collar we've used since we adopted her last year, and I’d really love to have it back if anyone found it near the Lifeguard Station or Oceanfront visitor center.

Bearded dragon, orange-brown with white tail tip

I lost my bearded dragon, Orion, yesterday around 3pm near the Waterside District in downtown Norfolk. He's about 10 inches long from head to tail, with vibrant orange-brown scales and a distinctive white tip on his tail. He has a tiny circular scar on his left front leg where he got a pinch while shedding last month. He usually rides on my shoulder when I walk, and I’m really worried because he’s been part of our family for years—he means a ton to my kid. If you’ve seen him, I’d be grateful to hear from you; I’ll meet you anywhere in Hampton Roads to pick him up.

Bearded dragon, orange-tan, 12 inches, blue tail ring

I lost my bearded dragon, Ember, yesterday around 3pm. She's orange-tan with darker stripes along her back, about 12 inches from nose to tail, and she has a bright blue ring around the tail tip. I last saw her near the Oceanfront boardwalk by 24th Street in Virginia Beach, but she could have slipped into the dunes behind the souvenir stands. She has a small crescent-shaped scar above her left nostril and tends to bask under a blue heat lamp. She's a much-loved family member; my daughter is really worried and I’d be grateful for any help bringing her home.
